Kovalev is not a pressure fighter, he is a puncher-boxer. When he does close the distance (with underrated footspeed) he doesnt look to stay in that distance unlike say Golovkin who looks to stay in power-punching range all fight.
Like many boxersm he bounces and never stays at a particular distance. When he is close he usually doesnt over commit and throws short punches in combos where Golovkin, Maidana, Matthysse etc... look for a big shot.
I'd say Kovalev is a boxer, not a pressure fighter. He boxes at range, gets in and out. times his shots well and uses his foot work. He is not the type of fighter to walk his opponent down, and constantly apply pressure.
I agree with you. I also think Stevenson is severely overrated and hasn't faced any E.Euro yet. Hate or like it if you don't prove yourself against E.Euros from middleweight up to heavyweight nowadays then you ain't s-h-i-t. These guys dominate every bigh-boy boxing division there is at the Olympics, World Amateurs, and Professional Boxing. This can't be such a coincidence. Stevenson hasn't faced a single E.Euro and in my eyes he's just a paper champ who Kovalev will literally destroy once he gets a chance.
To me Kovalev is a long arm style puncher.
When Kovalev doesn't respect you, he's a pressure fighter.
Otherwise I agree w/ you. Kovalev is good w/ his volume and distance, throwing bombs from medium to long range.
He does stalk, corner and because his power that psychologically cause pressure to an opponent, but he isn't your come forward with volume pressure guy. Good question... although I agree with your analysis more so I can see what Doc was saying.
hello richie boy . i'll be honest i based it on the cleverly fight more than his whole career.but the mans dangerous...
Kovalev himself says he is a big puncher comfortable from medium and long ranges. For me he is not a pressure fighter really he is an explosive hitter that lingers on the outside engaging then dipping out. Not a pressure fighter in the common manner like Golovkin who gets on you and stays on you for extended periods. Kovalev doesn't care if you get away, he resets from a distance much more often. What are your guys thoughts?
