It's kinda relative, I mean, there are boxers out there who fought too long, stayed in the game too long and absorbed like a million punches but are still in perfect state of health. Of course, the chances of suffering brain or other neurological damage in boxing are greater, but luck still plays a huge part in it. I mean, you can get in serious physical trouble with just one punch.
As in any sport, there is an element of danger especially in boxing. If you are going to box, practice your head movement, because if done successfully, it will reduce your head from being hit often.
it depends really , i dont think you will , especially if you started when your 20 you should be okay. most boxers who get brain damage are heavywieghts who get hit alot . it can happen in any wieght division but more likley heavywieght as you will be taking heavier blows . if i was you id go for it ! good look man :)
As an example:
I'm 20 years old, and I'm a software engineering student. Let's say that I start boxing right now. I really get into it, and eventually have like 50 real ring fights without protection, just gloves. How big are the chances that I would sustain SEVERE brain damage? I know that 90% of retired boxers suffer from some sort of brain damage, but imagine if I were to stop when I become 30, would my brain be so messed up that I can't even write programs on the computer anymore? Will my brain be too destroyed to be able to think like I do now?
I'm talking about how big chances are that I'll suffer from something so severe that it will worsen my current state (i.e. make me unable to do any sort of intelligent job).
