People tend to dislike Mayweather because of the "Money" persona that he created/became in order to sell fights. He really is an excellent boxer, but his hyping of himself, the thug lifestyle, scrapes with the law including domestic abuse charges, and his burning of money have created a backlash by people who tend to favor the humble, hard working fighter who is trying to make his way by perfecting the craft, taking on all comers, etc...
The truth is that Mayweather was that guy until about 2005 or so. He was always confident in himself and always a hard worker. According to his ex and mother of his children, when they moved to Las Vegas and Floyd started to have more financial success, he became more involved in the lifestyle that he personifies now. Some of the bad press that he has gotten has been because of his feud with Arum, but he definitely played into the part of the villain by denigrating opponents in very disrespectful ways, acting in vulgar ways, and generally being a jerk in many ways.
He is trying to step back from that image a bit as seen in his outings since moving to Showtime. Time will tell if he can put that genie back in the bottle.
Good question. Hate is a very powerfully negative word.
.
My father told me "Don't hate. The person you hate probably has no idea how you feel".
.
Floyd doesn't even know the people who profess such hatred. So how much sense does their hatred really make? What are you going to do about your hatred, throw something at the TV? Are you going to punch your computer screen?
.
Here are some reasons.
.
1. Money. It's easy to hate a rich man when you're poor.
.
2. He's brash. Floyd's quite the $#!t talker. In fact, HBO 24/7 is rather boring without him. However, I'm willing to bet that Floyd is not the jerk he portrays during pre-fight. Some of it has to be true, unless he's a very good actor. However, by many accounts, he's actually a nice guy. The Bad Guy role started as a promotional need to play the villain. . . He's no angel but he's also not the foul person people often portray him as.
.
There are a few other reasons people might dislike Floyd Mayweather. Some blame his opposition and the fact that he never fought Manny Pacquiao. However, Floyd does not take soul blame for that debacle.
.
Others point to Floyd's style but that is also a weak argument. Sure, most love to see blood and knockouts. But ANY TRUE boxing fan would appreciate Floyd's mastery in the ring. Like him or not, he's clearly among the very best at what he does.
.
All the hate doesn't hold much water.
1) They take his Money Mayweather persona so personally. He is a boxer and an entertainer so when it's lights, camera, action he gives us excitement. Who really wants to see a calm and humble Mayweather on television? If boxing had no villains, it wouldn't be as exciting. No one knows him personally though so I don't know how you can dislike someone you know nothing about.
2) They aren't boxing fans. "Fans" say he is boring with his style but how can you like boxing if you don't like boxing? Boxing is the sport he is in and boxing is what he does. They want him to stand and trade punches and go for the knock out. That isn't boxing. Boxing is the art of hitting without getting hit and no one does that better than Mayweather. If you don't like it then you are not a boxing fan because that's what boxing is about. All those people they claim are entertaining aren't real boxers.
3) He is the best in the sport today but since he beats his opponents so easily, they claim he cherry picks. It's not cherry picking, it's him being that good. You aren't going to find anyone who has his level of skill so clearly no one is going to win with skill. They have to attack and hope to land a lucky punch but Mayweather's defense is too good. Since he sticks to what boxing truly is and easily out points his opponents, they think he is scared or is fighting easy fights.
The thing about Money is that he is a great boxer but bad at everything else.
Meaning there is more to hate than love.
no1s perfect... we all make mistakes in life so there's no need to mock him. i guess mayweather in the past acted obnoxiously and arrogant which lead to people disliking him. don't get me wrong tho, loads of people still admire him though and even more people do today as he is behaving the way he usually does behind closed doors
he boxes to win the fight and not to beat the opponent.....and he does that everytime....now that cannot be held against him technically but its sometimes not crowd pleasing esp. with other exciting fighter around in that division.....people would prob like him to mix it more...take risks and try to win conclusively.
Then theres the persona side where he can sometimes be obnoxious and intimidating...may be 50% true and 50% act.
Because he's black and he's very out spoken the world hates to see a black man at the top of something. The ones that hate him mostly or either White or Asian people.
They hold Floyd's native american heritage against him. He's a Slapaho.
it's not hate... it's just .. Floyd is a coward, who duck best fighters and wimps out...
Because he's a gay, a coward, a trash talker...what else should I say?
Is not he clearly the best boxer right now? So why he gets so much hate?
thats because when he come back from retirement back in 2009, everybody expected he's after dethroning pac....
but lo, everybody got disappointed... everybody got mad...
cuz he talk trash and backs it up
