For the greatest of all time, (and I mean no offence by this sentence), shouldn't he be known more?
He fought at a time when many of the boxing fans were not yet born, I myself was a baby boomer but when I was old enough to be a boxing fan in my pre-teens, I hardly knew him despite the fact that his career had even spanned much of the early 60s, I only got to hear his name being mentioned by my dad and uncles when analyzing and comparing the top fighters of that time as Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson and Cassius Clay ( later known as Muhammad Ali ) to him.
Reading about his life and career years later, I find him almost too good to be true. He was never beaten technically speaking at welterweight and his winning streak that included many knockouts was truly out of this world.
He was really ahead of his time and I think he can come at any era of boxing including our modern times and still be a formidable fighter and an outstanding champion.
It really bothers me that so many fair weather boxing fans that insist some other boxer usually Muhammad Ali is the greatest of all time, when in fact Ali himself on several occasions fully admits that Robinson was greater and the greatest of all time pound for pound and he meant greatest heavyweight of all time when referring to himself as the greatest. Robinson is the reason why pound for pound was originally created.
Any person who actually knows boxing will tell you Robinson is better than everybody you just mentioned.
he wasnt a heavyweight and most of the all time greats are...ali,foreman,tyson,marciano,dempsey... others you mentioned are contemporary therefore remembered....official lists and forums however will remember him as no.1
there isn't enough footage of him out there
Fighters like Mayweather, Pacquiao, Ali and Tyson are known more.
