Why is Mayweather fighting at a catchweight?

Haha love all these Mayweather lovers defending this FRAUD.

Floyd is a hypocrite plain and simple.

This catch weight brouhaha only makes sense when Pac and Floyd use it to fight bigger opponents. Catch weight has been there as when the time boxing is born. PAcquiao had been called the "catch weight king" for years. Now its Floyd's turn. Pac fought Cotto at 145 when Cotto usually tips in at 146. For crying out loud, that's one pound only. One pound. But never gave Manny credit.

Why is Mayweather fighting at a catchweight?

- The term usually is, "at an agreed weight of"...But the fans never seemed to agree. Trust me bro, at the end of the day, if and when Floyd beats Canelo, many will point to that 2 pounds like PAcquiao experienced in his many fights and Floyd wont get any credit.

A lot of water has gone under the bridge since then. Floyd has remained a regular welterweight although he has been successful in his two stints at junior middleweight ( vs. ODLH in 2008 and Cotto in 2012 ).On both occasion, however, its clear that he had to struggle against his bigger foes especially ODLH who reportedly came in at 160 lbs. to Floyd's 150 lbs. at fight time..

Per Wiikipedia acoount: Mayweather vs. De La Hoya

Main article: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather

Mayweather's next match was the long-anticipated fight against six-division champion and WBC light-middleweight titleholder Oscar De La Hoya on May 5, 2007. De La Hoya's belt was on the line, which required Mayweather to move up in weight from 147 pounds to 154. However, Mayweather was outweighed by more than 10 pounds the night of the fight, coming in at only 150 pounds.

On the other hand, Canelo Alvarez has long outgrown the welterweights and is now a regular junior middleweight who is also considered as potent enough to even vie for the middleweight crown.

Floyd himself said that his walk around weight was around 150 lbs.and hence it follows that to this day, his normal fighting weight is below that.

The question to be asked is are both fighters required to meet the 152 lbs. catch weight at weigh-in?

If the answer is yes, it is even disadvantageous to Floyd since he has to bulk up to 152 lbs. at weigh-in and reduce afterwards to below 150 lbs. which is his normal effective fighting weight. On the other hand, after checking in 152 lbs. at weigh-in, Canelo could proceeed to bulk up to 154 lbs. or over.

If the answer is no, then the two pound weight difference from the division limit which Canelo is used to meeting at weigh-in may prove disadvantageous to him. But then again, Canelo is still young and he is essentially a small junior middleweight compared to the likes of Trout, Angulo and others hence it could not be much of a factor in this fight.

@ Asker---I don't think so at this early stage of his career. He's till young and I think we ought to wait patiently and watch how he develops naturally and physically into a full fledged middleweight. I think he still has some baby fat.

U seem to forget that mayweather is comeing up 5 pounds so its only right canelo has to drop 2.

That's easy, because he's fighting a guy that walks around at 180-185 and rehydrates to a light heavyweight by the time he climbs into the ring. Win or lose Canelo is another Arturo Gatti type clown that's hiding in a division he has no business in because he can't hack it at the higher weights.

Floyd is seeking a competitive advantage and talking out of both sides of his mouth, but this is boxing and shouldn't be surprising.

Bob Arum: "Yesterday I was lying, but today I'm telling the truth!"

It was Alvarez and his team that came up with the catchweight. He did not suggest it. In fact he pushed it up to 152 lbs when Alvarez and his team suggested a catchweight of 150 lbs. Just like Marquez. Marquez is the one who wanted the catchweight not Floyd.

Canelo is only going down like 2 pounds and will come on fight night 20 pounds heavier.

I can understand what floyd is doing...2 pounds is not that bad...I give him his props for fighting canelo...

Don't laugh at them Kaley. They're my friends...lol

Well Bat Dad. Why were you taking that up? That's last year, right? Everything changes, okies?

"I would never want to put a fighter in a position where he's not comfortable. I want a guy when he's at his best. If he's at his best at 154 and he's strong and he's solid, then that's the fight we're fighting at. I walk around at 150, but at the end of the day - skills pay the bills.... Give me the guys where they are comfortable at their weight so there are no excuses."
