Marciano's two greatest wins were over an old Jersey Joe Walcott, and an even older Joe Louis who came out of retirement just because he was broke.
Ali beat the best heavyweights in the best era of heavyweight boxing that there ever was. He took out the monstrous big bear Sonny Liston as a very young man, was exiled for 3 years, came back took out every top contender and beat Joe Frazier two out of three times. He toyed with the great Floyd Patterson, was the first man to beat the undefeated world champ George Foreman, then went on to beat several of the best fighters in a generation that came a full era after his own.
It's all about who you beat. And Ali beat the best without question.
I appreciate your enthusiasm, but Rocky Marciano was hardly the best.
First, and I dont consider this his fault, Rocky had very light competition. Most of the quality opponents had aged badly and were not "game". Secondly Marciano was WAAAY too small a heavyweight.
And again this is about pedigree. I could EASILY see Ali beating Ezzard Charles and an aging Joe Louis. THERE IS NO WAY I COULD SEE, Rocky Marciano beating up on Joe Frazier or a young George Foreman.
In all time greats, there are alot of fighters I COULDNT see Marciano beating that I could easily see Ali beating. I dont think Marciano had the size OR strength to fight Lennox Lewis (and win). Ali could.
Its really just a matter of who did you fight....and in boxing legacies, truthfully Marciano got off light.
Ali fought better fighters then Marciano, Ali fought Frazier and had arguably the fight of the century in Manila, Foreman rope-a-dope and Larry Holmes to name a few. Plus Ali's tactics like the rope-a-dope really backed up that fact because at the time Foreman was unstoppable and he knocked down Smokin' Joe 6 or 7 times in 2 rounds. On the other hand Marciano fought Joe Louis and Jersey Joe and Ezzard Charles and he had a mean right hand but tbh Ali was a better all round fighter
Well because ali was so visible and charismatic in one of the greatest eras in boxing.And with TV becoming more available, boosted alias visibility. While Marciano is my favorite boxer and he was undefeated, the calliber of opponents that the two fought was not even close to equal. While rockys era was great as well, the majority of his opponents were not as talented as alis. Plus Ali had the stints out of boxing and returned to greatness.
My personal opinion is the sugar ray Robinson is the greatest of all time and I think a lot if people agree.
Don't forget Johnson and Dempsey either
It is always difficult to compare boxers from different eras.
Marciano is criticized for not fighting the best from different times, and beating several good fighters who were past their prime.
Ali, promoted himself in an attempt to sell tickets.
He was also a very good fighter, and unlike Patterson fought all the contenders, rather than duck them to keep his belt.
Ali fought everyone that was available, and there were lots of very good heavyweights at this time.
I don't think Ali was the best heavyweight of all time, and certainly not the best P4P of all time, a fact even he said was not true.
Ali had the physical advantages over Marciano, but fights are in the ring, not on paper, so we will never know what might have happened if they had fought during their prime.
Because Ali fought way tougher and better fighters than Marciano.
It's because he was the greatest heavyweight during a time of great heavyweights. People who would have dominated the division for years if he wasn't around.
Marciano's record speaks for itself, but it was mainly against journeymen, and the great fighters he beat were way past their prime. That's why. It's not his fault, he just beat what was around at the time.
Larry Holmes is another example. He had everything as a boxer, but many people don't consider him a great as there just wasn't anyone around in his class that could challenge him.
