Mills Lane was arguably the greatest third man in the ring and I'm of the opinion that he is the GREATEST of all time.
Why did Mills Lane let Holyfield vs Tyson continue...?
Actually, Mills never knew what happened. He thought it was a simple clinch and he did his job to separate the big boys. The thing is, as Tyler put it, it was the first ever situation as no one ever saw a volatile ear biter like Mike before. Lane was stunned as he watch Mike spit something on the canvass.Composure was the name of the game alright. But when Mills let the boys continue, he noticed Holyfiled bleeding. T'was Evander's ear! It was about the time the situation struck Lane and he stopped the fight. But where did the piece of Evander's ear go? well that's another topic. Cheers buddy for coming back active!
Mills Lane was put into a very rare if not the 1st ever situation for any referee, with Tyson 1st attempting to break Holyfield's arm then twice biting his ear and after taking off 2 points and clearly stating the next time will be disqualification. Mills Lane did as good as any one could be expected in that situation.
*Had mills Lane disqualified Tyson prior some people possibly might of had complaints with it but because he stopped it when he did no one could have a problem with the disqualification,.
I wondered the same thing, surely a bite on the ear is an immediate DQ requiring no prior warning. What did he do take two points and issue a warning didn't he? Not good enough really, Holyfield is lucky he didn't lose the other piece of the other ear when Tyson tried again, the referee's absolute priority is the safety of both fighters and so he should have DQ'd Tyson immediately and got Evander a tetanus shot.
Great referee but he got that one wrong
Mills did D.Q. Tyson, when he took a chunk out of the ear.
It is uncommon to disqualify a fighter in a championship fight on the first or even second foul, but it has been done.
I do not think he let the fight go on too long, and did the correct thing.
If this had been a non championship fight he probably would have stopped it sooner.
Because it was MIKE TYSON and EVANDER HOLYFIELD. There was so much hype going into that fight, Mills would have copped a lot of late of criticism had he stopped it after the first foul.
Had it not been Tyson, I'm sure he would have intervened earlier.
Ok.. Tyson had just bit off a chunk of Holyfields ear.. That in itself would justify a disqualification...
Tyson was like a man possessed in the corner, it was clear that he had lost all control of himself.. (His corner had lost control of him at this point too...),
Why did such an experienced referee like Mills Lane allow the fight to continue...??
