Jake LaMotta is number one, reglarly voted best chin in history, could really take a punch and was never floored in six fights with great Sugar Ray Robinson.
Carmen Basillio second, Basillio once attacked a referee for stopping a fight where he was taking a beating. Basilio was a welterweight who battled middleweights and was about as durable as they come.
Rocky Graziano at third. Graziano was no doubt very tough but not quite as tough as the other two.
In order of toughness:
1. Jake LaMotta
2. Carmine Basilio
3. Rocky Graziano
Thumbs up to Frank R and Hairydude, I agree. LaMotta was the George Chuvalo of the lighter weights, Jake's chin and durability was the stuff of legend. Basilio was smaller, but almost as tough as Jake, far more quick and mobile than either LaMotta or Graziano and the Onion Farmer had the heart of a Lion. Graziano was the lesser of the three, although still very respectable.
I rate them as follows
1. Lamotta-tough as they come. Had a chin of granite and could not be hurt. He did not have much power and that was only of his only liabilities. The only man to beat a still prime Robinson.
2. Basilio-the onion farmer was both a welterweight and middleweight champ. He is heart and determination personified.
3. Graziano-overrated in my opinion. Had 3 wars with Zale but mostly beat up on welterweights. He had better power than Jake but was not as good as Jake or Carmen.
