So now, at this time in boxing, it is hard to say which division is the "best", or "my favorite", due to the above. But in the past, of course, the Heavyweight Division has always been the most publisized division of any division, but Middleweight (&/or the divisions near them) are the most exciting b/c of the speed plus power (i.e. Ray Robinson, considered the greatest pound-for-pound boxer ever, or even Thomas Hearns, moved like a lighter fighter, yet hit like beasts).
And as far as routing for your country's fighters, that's normal. Everyone was the champ to be from their country. However, I just route for who I believe is the best boxer in the fight/division.
BUT, I will say that boxing is not as popular as it once was because there has not been a great U.S. Heavyweight Champion in many years. And since Heavyweight is the most prestigious division, that has severely hurt boxing, unfortunately, overall.
I hope this helps you in some way.
hw and mw - don't pay attention to the rumours that "hw is dead nowadays" just because it's not being dominated by americans. Middleweight was my favorite though since the yearly de la hoya days so not much change there either. Will watch welterweight too - but rarely.
Middleweight and lighter classes usually are faster and more exciting.
I wouldn't think that choosing a sports favorite from a different country is un-American (although I'm sure that some people would think so).
As of now, the welterweight class is the best and most competitive in boxing. As far as who you root for...anyone you want. People traditionally root for fighters of their ethnic decent or area they're from, but it doesn't really matter.
At the moment I'd say Lightweight from a domestic point of view.

On a world level I'd have to go for Super Bantamweight
light heavy weight! speed and big punches!
Right, so I'm a boxing fan but not massive enough to really pay attention to each weight class so I'm wondering what is your fav weight class? and as a boing fan? Should our favourite boxers be from our country or what?
