Cotto looked great. He was sharp and focused but yes, his opponent had something to do with why he looked so spectacular. Martinez was clearly not as mobile as he was in his fight with Chavez Jr. or before that. Perhaps Cotto could have still beaten that Martinez, but he was not facing that Martinez. I don't want to take anything away from Cotto. He went out and did what he had to do. I would like to see him against a prime elite however, to see how "real" the Freddie Roach effect has been on him. I hope we get that chance.
I doubt that anything in your paragraph was remotely true. If you don't buy into Cotto's hype then let's look at the list of opponents he has fought throughout the course of his career: Zab Judah, Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito (twice), Paul Malignaggi, Demarcus Corley, Joshua Clottey, Manny Pacquiao, Ricardo Mayorga, Floyd Mayweather, Austin Trout, Carlos Quintana, Ricardo Torres, and Kelson Pinto. That looks like an A-level quality of opposition to me. Quintana, Torres, Pinto, and Malignaggi were all previously undefeated until Cotto defeated them and gave them their very first loss as a professional.
If Martinez was injured like you claimed that he was then why would his handlers allow him to fight? If he was hurt or injured, then he should have postponed the fight until his knees have fully healed.
You're nitpicking Cotto's epic win and career resurgence.
I was impressed but given Martinez' age, inactivity and injury problems, I'll be more impressed if he beats canelo or golovkin.
Martinez is 39, Has Bad knees that have been surgically repaired & he hasn't been in the ring in a year & 2 months. Let alone trained much.
Martinez looked as if he didn't even belong. He was hobbling the whole way & looked very old. He didn't even look good against Martin Murray. Some people even felt he lost that fight, so did I.
Cotto has a ton of retarded fan boys & nationalistic Morons but real knowledgeable boxing fans can attest. I don't buy into Cotto's hype.
