Was Mike Tyson an actually skilled fighter?

I'm having a debate and i think he was an extremely skilled boxer, my dad thinks he just hit really hard, just want some outside opinion on this! Thanks

tell your dad its cus d'amato who taught tyson...

if he dont know cus... then stop talkin boxing to him

Well he has speed that few HWs come close to and have freakish power but as for skills he is one of the most skilled HWs of the last 30 years

For one he knows how to fight short and minimize the disadvantage of being a short fighter (only Ruslan Provodnikov and Roman Gonzalez mastered it today) by crouching and fighting low, he also had excellent headmovement and could come forward and cut the distance without being hit. He also could counter taller fighters which is extremely hard to do since the shorter fighter is cutting the distance (only Odlanier Solis does that today)

No question or controversy about it for his early foundations in boxing was taught by respected boxing guru Cus D' Amato who earlier led Floyd Patterson to a considerable reign as the world heavyweight champion in the past mid 50s to the early 60s. Tyson moved, punched in combinations and defended very well in his best prime. He was just beaten by bigger, better skilled, stronger, more determined foes but mostly in his downslide already.

Of course he was skilled.

A champion who relied more on freakish power than skill was George Foreman.

Mike Tyson depended on skill, speed and some power. Tyson was a small heavyweight, you can't ko bigger men without skill and something else

The guy can punch ....and skills to begin with. IMHO Mike Tyson pre 1988 was the most dangerous person to ever lace a pair of gloves

Very much so, his head movement in the beginning was excellent, but later he forgot all that and became a one punch wonder, loading up for big right hand power punches. He was best with Kevin Rooney in his corner fighting the Cus D'Amato style.

Very skilled boxer I think. Such awesome head movement. Slipping punches and coming back with nightmare hooks.

Ur dad is wrong
