Was Don King good for boxing?

Lets see, Don King (if that is even his real name) invented pay per view. Back then it was called "closed circuit" but the end result is the same. Don is the only private citizen (if in fact he is a private citizen) that I know of who actually owns his own satellite. Yeah, that is where "King Vision" has the edge on most other pay per view companies. Don King was good for boxing like like Abraham Lincoln was good for penny's. He was so dominant that he actually became an American icon, like Apple pie or Chevy, Over all Don was as good for boxing as nuclear power was for warfare, it depends on your perspective pertaining to boxing, and your definition of the word "good". One thing is for sure, Don was a huge part of boxing history.

In his day, DK made great fights and put on very good cards. His PPV's were almost always stacked from top to bottom, so in that sense he was very good for boxing.

He can't make a comeback now though. Stiverne is his fighter, but he's literally probably the only relevant fighter than King has in his stable.

Mike tyson hates him!

No

Everyone hated Don King. He robbed all his fighters and we all knew it. But was he actually better than what we have now.

Today, too many big fights dont happen. Golden Boy & Top Rank rivalry is largely to blame. King may have robbed his fighters, but these companies rob fans. They rob us of the fights we demand to see.

I notice King suddenly has the WBC heavyweight champion under his control again after Stiverne took it this week. At 82, he wont be around long, but would it be a bad thing if he made a comeback for a while?

In King's day, he had a bit of a monopoly in boxing. No other promoter could match him, so he gad nothing to fear if his fighters lost and he wanted to cash in, so made the big fights.

TR & GBP want to control more than each other so are selective with who fights who.

King gave us Tyson v Holyfield. Ali v Fraser. Ali v Foreman. Duran v Leonard. Fights dont come bigger than these.

Not so long ago, he arranged the 4 middleweight champs into a tournament which gave us an undisputed champ afterHopkins beat Trinidad. This is the sort of thing boxing needs.

In 1980, King guaranteed Leonard $10m to fight Duran. A figure never before heard of. If we had such a man today, my bet is Mayweather and Pacquiao would have been made offers they couldn't refuse 5 years ago.

I always saw him as an evil in boxing. But looking back, was Don King and his greed exactly what fight fans needed? I would far rather him over the current big 2 any day.
