I made a statistical analysis of both fighters in their prime and the numbers matched their actual fight totals; http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?...
What this means is that if both men had fought earlier when both were ''in their prime'' the fight punch stats would have been the same as that in their May 2012 bout.
To answer your questions;
1. Age has nothing to do with being in your prime. Mike Tyson was at his best from 20 years old to 25, while Lennox Lewis was at his best in his late 30's [he was getting kayod by nobodies in his early 20's].
2. Cotto has been fighting in 154lbs since 2010 while Mayweather has been fighting at 154lbs since 2007.
3. What does the Pacquiao fight have anything to do with this? ps; Cotto weighed in at the same weight in the Clottey fight at the limit in the Pacquiao fight that followed.
4. It's hard to say who was in their prime. I actually think both fighters were near their prime, both performed very well and the fight was competitive.
A win is a win. Floyd is, and was always better then Cotto, but Floyd is like Rocky, he's trying to stay undefeated. He will only fight past prime guys, or hype jobs.
A) age doesn't matter, people max out at different times two example Tyson was prime late teens, early 20's Lennox Lewis wasn't prime till 30's. Lewis was same age or older then Tyson, but Lewis was still prime. Tyson wasn't, and I was for Lewis, and would admit that.
The rest I agree with.
People pick and choose who the time when a fighter is in their prime. In my opinion, Cotto was not in hsi prime against Mayweather, but Mayweather was farther past his prime than Cotto was. Even at 36 years old, he is hard to beat. The farther back you go, the harder he was to beat.
Before seeing it regularly on here, I'd never heard anyone say Mayweather beat a "non prime" Cotto.
I find it a funny one given
A) Mayweather is older than Cotto
B) Cotto is naturally heavier than Mayweather
C) Cotto was considered "drained" making weight at 147" when Pacquiao fought him, but fought Mayweather at 154" and nobody here mentions Pacquiao fought a drained Cotto
D) Mayweather peaked around 2007 when he was in his late 20's and fought Hatton and DeLaHoya (5 years before Cotto) so it also wasn't a prime Mayweather
Why do people ignore these points?
Surely it isb't fair to have it that Cotto was past his prime but not Mayweather?
Mayweather rarely throws combinations these days. He is easily past his prime. He was 35 when he beat Cotto. Just because he hadn't lost a fight doesn't mean he was still in his prime.
