Smokin Joe Frazier 1970 vs Iron Mike Tyson 1988?

Hello Irene! These match ups are always a lot of fun for me. Smoking Joe Frazier was my favorite fighter in the 70's and when he defeated Muhammad Ali in 1971 I was thrilled at what was one of the greatest fights in boxing history. The 1970-71 version of Joe Frazier who defeated Bob Foster in devastating manner and gave Muhammad Ali his first career loss was a beast! He had a fierceness about him and with that wicked left hook of his along with that Philadelphia toughness (though he was from South Carolina) toughness and determination, was the best in the world for a while. The 1988 version of Tyson and a little before that first scared and then knocked out Michael Spinks was indeed a devastating power with a great combinationof speed and power and for a time he was also the best and looked like he may never lose a fight. Joe Frazier fought in a time that many boxing historians believe was the greatest for heavyweights as far as skill and competition goes. Here is a rundown of each fighter:

Mike Tyson

Won: 50

Lost: 6

Draws: 0

KO's: 44

Heavyweight Champ from 1986-90

Best wins over TKO3 Frank Bruno, TKO1 Carl Williams, KO1 Michael Spinks, TKO2 Tony Tubbs, TKO4 Larry Holmes, TKO7 Tyrell Biggs, TKO6 Pinklon Thomas, TKO2 Trevor Berbick

Joe Frazier

Won: 32

Lost: 4

Draws: 1

KO's: 27

Heavyweight Champ from 1970-73

Best wins over W10 W15 Oscar Bonavena, TKO4 George Chuvalo, KO11 Buster Mathis, TKO7, TKO5 Jerry Quarry, TKO5, TKO9 Jimmy Ellis, KO2 Bob Foster, W15 Muhammad Ali

The Fight

This would have been much like a Marciano vs Dempsey fight. In other words, a war! It would have been action packed with a ton of action. Could Frazier take Tyson's bombs and could Tyson stand up under the contstant pressure and big left hooks of Frazier? Both would meet in ring center and the leather wold begin to fly. Both men would get staggered by the other in a fight that would ultimately come down to who wants it more. The first 6-8 rounds would practically be even with bot men taking turns dominating the action with neither man giving an inch. Tyson would hurt Joe with a great upercut in round 9 but Frazier showing the heart of a Champ would fight back fiercely rattling Tyson with a great left hook at the bell. In round 10 both men would fight on even terms a little wary of the others punching power. In round 11 after a great exchange, Frazier would once again land the big left hok sending Tyson down for a 9 count. Tyson would be on shaky legs and have glassy eyes as the referee stops the fight.

Winner Joe Frazier TKO11

As much as I love Joe Frazier RIP there is no way that the fighters you mention at those years comes close to beating Mike Tyson. Tyson would have done the same thing to Joe as he did to his son Marvis KO in the first round. Joe had maybe the best left hook in boxing history but Tyson may have had the best of every thing both hands. Everyone knows how fast Mike was but he was also very strong he would have move Joe every where he wanted him to go.There is a rule in boxing never slug with a slugger Mike Tyson was the ultimate slugger. Let do the eye test. Which one would you fight if you had to lol?See what I mean as bad as Joe was there is no way I am fighting Mike Tyson head up on my best day now if you can get him to come down in weight lets say 110 lbs I might think about it. I can see Joe coming out going right after Mike winning that big hook at Mike"s head But Mike meets force with more force . Mike leads off with a deadly right hand trying to end it right then and there he misses but comes back with a left hook that catches Joe on the chin. Joe stops in his tracks something white was seen flying from the ring . Joe is looking for his right eye.

Tyson wins a close fight by TKO. I think Tyson would get Joe against the ropes and unleash a fury of body shots and uppercuts, which would send Joe to the canvas and the ref would stop the fight after this happened a few more times. I can't see Frazier having the punching power to rattle Tyson, who had a cast iron jaw and superior head movement.

Prime Mike Tyson in his prime was a near unstoppable beast. I always though of Tyson as a new and improved Frazier. Frazier had knockout power in his hook, but Tyson had knockout power with both hands and nearly every punch he landed. Frazier had crazy head movement, but Tyson had both head movement and speed which made him very hard to hit in his earlier days. Then there's the huge difference in hand speed. Tyson probably had the fastest hands on any heavyweight.

I'd go with Mike because of his strength, speed and power. Frazier had had problems with strong and powerful hitters as we'd seen with George Foreman, and Mike had a lot more speed and quickness than Foreman. Here's the deal though. We know that Tyson had very poor stamina. He lost steam after 5 rounds and wasn't used going the distance. If he doesn't knock Frazier out inside 5 rounds, he'd be in trouble by the 9th round and would likely be stopped by the 11th.

I've always been a big Frazier fan, but Mike was a good 10 or more pounds heavier than Joe at his best. I think he would eventually catch Joe with a brutal shot and knock him out.

I have always held the opinion that Joe Frazier would have been superior to Mike Tyson in just about every respect. Had they been able to fight at each's prime, Frazier would have KOed Mike faster than Holyfield did.

I could see Tyson winning this one late. But Joe Frazier, from 1968 to 1971, was on one of the most impressive runs in history. So he could also have a chance at winning this late.If Mike was to win, it would be on stoppage, because there is no way he is kayoing Joe Frazier.

Irene.....We all loved smokin Joe, but if you remember, it took hin awhile to get the rhythm going. He was susceptible to the knockdown as seen by Oscar Bonevena and of course George Foreman. Tyson on the other hand was most dangerous right from the start.I see both toe to toe banging away,Joe of course with his big left hook and Tyson utilizing bombs in both hands plus the uppercut. Very dangerous fight for both in the first round and I give the edge to Tyson. But once Tyson saw that Frazier wasn't going anywhere, he'd try to load up on one big punch and forget his training of multiple combinations from his peek a boo style. The one to get frustrated first would be Tyson and the longer it went, Frazier would eventually take control. My gut feeling is Frazier prevailing in war.

Tyson in round 3...would have knocked Frazier out, way too much hand speed for Frazier in '88

Smokin Joe Frazier 1970 vs Iron Mike Tyson 1988. Joe Frazier that just knocked out World Light Heavyweight Champion Bob Foster, in two rounds on Nov 18 1970 meets Iron Mike Tyson who knocked out Michael Spinks in round 1, on June 27,1988. Who would win and why?T

Respectfully, using Marvis as a comparison is horrible. Joe was a God, Marvis was a bum.

Now I agree, Joe would lose. I dont think it would be a one sided whitewash.

Mikes power came from mass, not form. Joes power came from form and from his legs, he dipped before he hooked and brought it up.

And Joe COULD take a hell of a punch, and with his constant head movement he would confuse young Tyson, for awhile.

I do think it would take awhile, but once Mike started lowering his shots to stop Joe from ducking and he stood up straight, he would KO him straight on the chin.

tyson was so much better than joe but still joe had more heart, in the end mike would win tko in round 7

I ask the same question a year back Irene and majority of the answers picked on Iron Mike. I think they're right.
