The fight
Both men meet in ring center and start firing away with Hagler landing the crisper punches. Carter is strong and attempts to get Hagler into the ropes but Hagler would keep him off of him while firing effective shots slowing the Hurricane down somewhat. By the 5th round it's apparent that the only way that Carter can win this fight is with a haymaker but Hagler is much too smart for that and continues to punish Carter with the faster and more effective punches. Carter does have some moments but not nearly enough to beat one of the very best. Carter is tough and does hear the final bell but knows he is a beaten man tonight.
Hagler W15
You have to go with Hagler. He's the proverbial "measuring stick" that is held to any great middleweight and his resume is too good. The Hurricane was a tough, angry fighter whose prowess in the ring is inflated because of his amazing life story. He was not much of a boxer and sacrificed too much defense for brute offense.
Hagler had speed, power, and an iron chin but he also had ring craft. He used his angles. I've never considered this question until now and this fight would surely be action packed but Marvin Hagler was a middleweight legend amongst middleweight legends. Gotta go with Hagler by KO.
Hurricane is a tough fighter, but there's way too much skill in Hagler, and he has the power to end a fight with one single shot from either hand. Hagler is also one of the fittest and well-trained boxers ever. He came to his fights 100% each time. Carter simply has no chance here.
Hagler would be the heavy favorite and Carter a serious underdog.
carter's record was sketchy. yes, he beat griffith and future heavyweight champion jimmy ellis in back to back fights, but those were his only highlights (although george benton and florentino fernandez were good fighters too).
hagler takes a wide decision here.
Ruben Hurricane Carter 1963 vs Marvelous Marvin Hagler 1983. In 1963, carter knocked out Emile Griffth in round 1. Three years later Griffith would become World Middleweight Champion, as Carter would be incarcerated. Hagler had won the World Middleweght Title in 1980 disposing of champion Alan Minter of Britain, in 3 rounds. Leading to this fantasy match up, Hagler destroyed Tony Sibson of Britain, in 8 rounds. Who would win and why?
