Hi David. Randy Turpin holds a win over Sugar Ray Robinson, and that's something not many can claim. Turpin has tremendous boxing skills, and he was very slick and crafty in the ring. Roy Jones Jr. looked almost unstoppable in his prime, beating very good slick boxers such as Bernard Hopkins and James Toney. In my opinion, Jones Jr. could give any Middleweight, Super Middleweight, or Light Heavyweight a good fight, no matter how great they were. Turpin was great, but I think Jones Jr. in his prime would pull this one. He was so athletic back then, and it wasn't really possible to stop him.
Jones Jr. SD15.
No contest. Don't make the mistake of believing that, because Randy Turpin handed Sugar Ray Robinson the first loss of a middleweight title, that he's an all-time great. You have to remember that Robinson was in the middle of a several weeks European tour, where he fought an average of Once Per Week. He was doing everything except training.
I give Turpin a ton of credit for troubling Robinson in the rematch. However, once again, Ray dug down deep and defeated Turpin.
The difference here is that Roy, as a middleweight, had never developed the outside problems that routinely plagued Robinson. He's faster and just as talented as Robinson but lacks the killer instinct and perfect balance. Roy is not the perfect boxer that Robinson was, ie: his technique is not as polished or "textbook" as was Robinson's. However, Roy is blessed with speed unseen in nearly all fighters, regardless of division.
Turpin was strong. Robinson once said he wondered how he stuffed all that muscle into a 160 lb. body. He looked like a small light-heavyweight. However, his style was awkward. Where it troubled a sub-conditioned Robinson, Turpin's style would be no match for the gym rat that Jones was.
Roy rarely used or showed a killer instinct and it's not likely that he would do so here, unless Turpin pushed the wrong buttons and unleashed "RJ". That's not likely to happen. Turpin would go to the later rounds, never seriously hurt but hopelessly outmatched. .... until the ref has seen enough.
Jones Jr. by TKO in 11
Roy Jones Jr. tested positive for PEDs.
If they were to fight on an equal playing field with drug tests then Jones will end like in his Tarver fight.
If Turpin gets in an even playing field and takes the same PEDs as Jones, who knows what could happen. Turpin beat an past it Robinson, who knows what he could do with roids.
What i do know is that Turpin has a better guard. Roy Jones had speed but his hands were way too low.
I liked Turpin but he would be no match for RJJ.
