Th greatest IMo was Joe Louis.He held the title for nearly 12 years and fought everyone available .He also served his country during WW11 and donated two purses to both the Army and Navy relief funds.Then the US thanked him by taxing him on those purses with interest added to it, eventhough he donated it to help the war effort. Never complained, but came back after retirement trying to earn enough to pay the back taxes. A true gentleman who never degraded an opponent.
There is a better one: even though Ali claimed to be the greatest, he once said that Joe Louis is better. I think I agree because Joe fought a LOT more than Ali did.
Muhammad Ali deserves it for sure he transcends the sport of boxing.

But I'm more of a fan of Mike Tyson and Joe Frazier.
