Just watch the Margarito bout which i think was an amazing display of combination punching.
He also showed great combination punching against David Diaz. But Margarito and Diz are precisely the type of fighters that would make Pacquiao look very very good for their gameness and come forward style. But where was Pacquiao's combination punching against Juan Manuel Marquez who iced him? He threw a lot a combination against a show-boating Tim Bradley in their last fight but most missed their mark though he looked great throwing those combos from the casual fans' perspective.
No way.
George Foreman Joe Louis and Larry Holmes may not be known for their fast volume combination punching but watch many of their KO wins and you will see that those were achieved by the employment of an assortment of punches---straights hooks crosses and uppercuts.
Marquez is a better combination puncher with his use of the uppercut punctuating or topping his combos. Pacquiao rarely uses the uppercut I noticed. He does not even use a variety of punches unlike old idol Elorde did in his heydays.
Some great ones have already been mentioned, but Ricardo Lopez and Orlando Canizales automatically spring to mind when I think combination punchers.
There are guys who shoe-shine (Leonard), and then there are ones who throw precise well placed punches in combination, and there is a big difference. Those two in particular were surgical with the combinations they strung together. Pep was nice with it too.
Pac throws a lot of punches, and he's shown to be quick enough to land enough to have a cumulative effect on his opponents, but I've noticed that he'll arm punch only to set up the straight left a lot of the time.. That's not necessarily a bad thing at all, seeing as how it's worked for him, and I respect him for what he's shown he's able to do offensively.. Just an observation. That said, I have seen better combination punchers.
Vs Barrera when he announced himself in the p4p league, he was exceptional with combinations.
Through most of his career he was.
Un recent years this has declined badly though and I would say Mayweather is the same. Both now throw single punches a lot and that is a big indicator of a fighter in decline.
I spotted Manny using less and less combos before Bradley beat him. It was gradually becoming apparent and because of it, I felt he was there for the taking.
Right now, Mayweather is there for the taking. Has been for a few years now. Just happens no one has caught him yet. His guard is declining and he's throwing less combos. Both are past prime now though.
On combo best ever, someone who was actually excellent at this and also became a single punch at a time fighter later on was Tyson.
Young Tyson was a machine with his combos. Old Tyson just tried to get a KO with every punch.
Combos matter big. When a fighter throws less of them it is the biggest indicator they are in decline
He's definitely one of the best ever.
I think the greatest was prime RJJ though, his combinations were just ridiculous.
No, his combinations are just flashy and appealing because of his speed
Arguello, Ricardo Lopez, etc. Those are the true ATGs in combination punching with accuracy
you a nuthugger? no, pacs asset aint his combos as many will beat him in that department... the only best combo i can think of thst he possess is his combination of chin, speed, stamina and hardpunches w/c rarely comes in one package to any boxer.
The boxer with the slickest combinations I have ever seen was Sugar Ray Robinson. There is a reason most consider him the best boxer ever, and that includes Ali who said Robinson was the greatest.
Pac is obviously one of the best at "punches in bunches", but I think Sugar Ray Robinson was the best at combos. My top 5 would be Louis, Robinson, Ali, Duran and Ray Leonard.
hes good but i wouldnt say hes the best of all time but as i said he is good
Best ever, Pacquiao
Have you ever seen [live or on film] another boxer throw combinations like Manny Pacquiao?
Just watch the Margarito bout which i think was an amazing display of combination punching.
No, that would be Ray Robinson, but there have been many greats equal to or even better than Manny. Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., Roberto Duran, Ray Leonard and Ricardo Lopez to name a few. Manny is a great, but there have been a few better.
