Many years ago, the Ring was indeed the 'bible' of boxing. It was the one publication that the boxing world relied on for fact and figures, as well as overall expert opinions
Thankfully, with the introduction of the worldwide web and social media, the average boxing fan can now keep in touch with the actual boxers themselves (twitter etc).
The Ring magazine is no longer the 'must have' publication. There are thousands of similar up to date websites you can tap into.
I was receiving live updates from the Mayweather camp, via social media. This would have been unheard of in the 1980's - the world is getting smaller.
I have scant disregard for the Rings P4P ratings... The brand is living off its name. I have always considered that they are playing to the crowds, they give the public what they want (weather it's true or not is irrelevant).
The magazine is living on borrowed time. How soon until the subscriptions don't cover the cost of publishing???
If a Japanese heavyweight akin to Audley Harrison emerged with a billion followers - The Ring magazine would have him in the top 10 P4P list over night... That's another possible billion punters to suck up to....
The Ring magazine is like any great champion.... They dominate their era, live off their reputation... But ultimately, their time runs out... And the next big thing moves in.. In this case, it's the internet.
I agree with you on pretty much everything, can't really fault Wladimir for having such weak opposition, but we can blame the ring for giving him a higher p4p rating because of this, where is Hopkins?
You know I was gonna say something....
I didnt hear the hammering noise of Eddie F nailing the coffin shut.
Well said, and completely true.
I have one question...
Where is Rigondeaux? Guess he's gotta beat Mares too.
the ring ratings is bullsh!t,can't believe it where's hopkins and rigo
Abner Mares #5??? Absolute HORSESHIT!
The latest update is hard to work out. Some of the main points of contention are..........
Wladimir moves up to 4 after defeating Pianeta who is possibly the biggest tomato can he has ever faced.
Mares comes in at 5. I have no problem with Mares being in the top 10, and I have have had him in my top 10 for a while now. The thing that annoys me is that he has gone from outside the top 10, to number 5 after beating Ponce De Leon, who is nowhere near the top 20 let alone the top 10. Ok, Mares won another belt, in another division, which is great, however it doesn't merit that big of a jump in the ratings.
Martinez falls from 4 to 7 after beating Murray, who is a good solid opponent, in a closely contested fight. It was a narrow victory (some say he lost) but it was still a victory and Martinez shouldn't fall from 4 to 7 in the ratings because of this.
Canelo enters the top 10 which I have no problem with considering he beat Trout who in terms of prime, live opponents, is Canelo's biggest victory to date. What I do have a problem with is Donaire dropping out of the top 10 altogether. Not only was his defeat to Rigo his first in 12 fights, he also had arguably the best streak of opponents in boxing up to that point. He dropped from 4 to 10 and now out of the top 10 by getting beat once by a world class opponent, which to me makes no sense.
Anyway, what are your thoughts on this?
