Jerry Cooney versus Tommy Morrison....who wins?

Big Mo,

Great match up. Tommy's head movement with the Hook Uppercut combination would be the very stationary Jerry's downfall. I'm of the opinion that Tommy's left hook was more fluid than Jerry's and I would further my opinion by suggesting that Tommy fought the better competition. Jerry's biggest win came against a very old Ken Norton.

I think this would have been a very entertaining fight while it lasted. The Duke stops Gentleman Gerry in less than six rounds. Thanks Mo

I'm not sure we ever saw Gerry Cooney at his potential best. He destroyed a rusty Ken Norton and then sat on ice for 13 months before facing Larry Holmes. However, most were unaware of the internal battles in Cooney's camp. He was much too loyal to his managers, Dennis Rapaport and Mike Jones, known as the "Wacko Twins".

Because Don King owned most of the heavyweights, and the Wacko Twins wanted to be promoters instead of managers, Cooney sat on ice for a while. They knew he was a draw, being a powerful white heavyweight at the time, that they were more concerned with what they could make from him than what was best for the fighter and his career.

With proper preparations, I believe Cooney would have survived a few scary moments and catch the over-zealous Morrison by surprise. It's possible that Morrison would fight a wise fight, as he did against George Foreman. He also fought a scared fight. However, George was very patient and showed Morrison a bit too much respect. Cooney was a bit more aggressive. After feeling Cooney's left hook, Morrison would become a bit defensive and fall into a trap.

Neither man had a great chin but we know Morrison's is clearly weaker.

Cooney by KO in 5.

Hello Big Mo! Great match up of two tremendous left hookers. Gerry Cooney had a big buildup after his demolition of Ken Norton in 1 round. He also beat Jimmy Young and Ron Lyle though neither was exactly what you would call in their prime. And though he lost, he did fight admirably vs Larry Holmes and shook the Champ a few times during that fight before losing. Tommy Morison also had a big buildup and was knocking everybody out that stepped in the ring with him. But like Coney when he faced the best he came up short such as his fights vs Ray Mercer and Lennox Lewis prove. Both men faced George Foreman with Cooney getting knocked out and Morrison fighting a smart fight and using his boxing skills to take a decision win. Cooney has the height and reach advantage but Morrison is faster. It's conceivable that there could be multiple knockdowns in this slugfest as neither man has what I would call a great chin. I believe that Cooney would fight well early in the fight before fading and Morrison would land one of his big left hooks in about the 10th round.

Morrison WKO10

This is a great match-up of big heavyweight bangers. It'd be slam-bang action with Cooney outpunching or probably even knocking out Morrison.
