Ali was a breath of fresh air in boxing. He fought all the contenders and did not duck or avoid people.
I think he should have retired sooner, but when he was in his prime he was a joy to watch.
Almost everyone in boxing liked Ali, for his ability and skills.
I did not agree with the way he talked about others, but understand what he was trying to do.
Jake LaMotta was a no nonsense type of fighter and a straight shooter as far as givng credit as he fought perhaps the greatest fighter in Sugar Ray Robinson and he thought that Muhammad Ali was the fastest and most naturally skilled fighters that he had ever seen especially for a heavyweight.
LaMotta was always a straight shooter, he always stated his mind, and most of the time Jake was dead on accurate. I agree with him, Ali was the best heavyweight ever, and most certainly one of Boxing's best and brightest. There have been smaller fighters with equal and even better skills, but no one at heavyweight was better than Ali at his peak.
Coming from one great to another great, that's not just a compliment---that's a tribute. And to think that Jake La Motta became noted for his fierce rivalry with a Muhammad Ali-fight alike great Sugar Ray Robinson whom he rarely sing paeans to during and after their respective careers, that's probably the highest form of accolade one fighter could give to another. Jake though admitted that Robinson was the best fighter he ever fought.
He says he's one of the greatest heavyweights of all time if not THE greatest?
