Well, if one wants to compare this in the likes of Dempsey-Tunney with a Charles win, then one could turn around and make the comparisons Of Ezzard and Marciano with a Dempsey win, or how about Harold Johnson putting Charles down, or Bivins with around half dozen knockdowns on Charles ? But this also was not a prime Charles. And neither was it a prime Jack with Tunney. With the assumption both in their primes, I feel this could go either way.
I feel Ezzard had the overall better boxing skills. As far as speed, maybe Charles? but I think that would be more likely at middle and lt. heavy. But Jack was more explosive, so if, if Ezzard was slightly 'hand' faster it still evens out. I just don't see Ezzard having the same dancing at heavy, as he did at lighter weights. A plus for Jack.
Remember Tunney mapped out very strategically for a long long time how to beat Jack. And nobody strategized, including Charles, battle plans like Tunney.
In my opinion Jack catches Charles in the mid late rounds for a ko or tko. In his bout against Rocky, Ezzard use his left jab well, but often pushed it against Rocky and often didn't snap it or quickly return it, using as a feeler. I think This would prove bad against Jack because it left his body exposed, and Jack was a body smasher. And Charles often would go toe to toe in mid ring. A no no with Jacks two fisted power. I feel Charles outboxes him, but does get caught often in the process and once, too often.
This will be a close one but I think if Gene Tunney can outpoint Jack Dempsey twice then so can Ezzard Charles. Ezzard Charles is underrated. He has win over Joe Louis and was the only fighter that went the distance with Rocky Marciano. Jack Dempsey was a ferocious puncher so there will always a good chance that he will end this fight but I am slightly in favor of Charles pull out a close unanimous decision over Jack.
The Ezzard Charles that handed Joe Louis his only loss since Max Schmeling would have also easily outpointed Jack Dempsey but after surviving some scary moments with the Manassah Mauler in the first five rounds.
Hello TG! Im going with the majority. Unanimous win for Ezzard Charles. But if the Dempsey Roll aint passive, i can see Charles rolling and hitting the canvass more than once with a possible stoppage.
I can't see why anyone would pick Dempsey. Why?
Because it goes like the Gene Tunney fight. That's all I can say, this is not only a replica of the Tunney fight (Ezzard fought in a similar way, just faster) but it's easier for Charles.
Charles UD15.
Ezzard Charles is faster and technically superior than Dempsey. He'd outpunch Jack Dempsey en route to a UD win.
A prime Dempsey stops Charles. Charles may be been a better technical fighter, but he was stopped by Walcott and Marciano, so I think Dempsey would do the same.
