Gentleman Toughguy,
I hate to admit this, but I'm of the opinion that Aaron would stand there and trade shot for shot with the iron jawed Chavez. Pryor was a beast, we're talking the same Pryor that walked through Alexis. The same Pryor the Leonard moved up a weight class to avoid. That Pryor.
I've always been of the opinion that a in his prime Alexis would give Julio a tough fight possibly beating him and Pryor devastated him not once but twice. Alexis, who's straight right was better than Julio's, in my opinion and who's left hook was just a tad bit below Julio's, hit Pryor with everything including the kitchen sink and did'nt faze Pryor at all. I think Julio would work the body more effectively than Alexis did, but with little or no effect.
This fight would indeed be a war, but Pryor was all about the war and Chavez was always all about the pride and I think that pride alone would be enough to keep Julio in exchanges that would last a few more seconds than they were suppose to and get caught with shots that would drop most 140 pounders but PRIDE would hold him up. This fight would be a barn burner but "The Hawk" would hurt Julio late and possibly stop him in the fourteenth.
This is one of the best fight match up's you've come up with. This would have been a classic but with consequence's, both fighters in my opinion would be ruined if not ruined then far less the men they were when they entered the ring, brutal, brutal fight that could probably be held in a phone booth with room to spare.
Several people here aren't giving Chavez the credit he deserves. First of all, people are acting like Taylor was some bum, when he was a gold medalist and undefeated young champ that was being hailed as the next superstar until Chavez ruined him. They're also bringing up Chavez's losses in the latter part of his career, while overlooking the fact that he was already a 90+ fight veteran and had been in 25+ title fights by that stage in his career. Pryor, for his part, was knocked out by a bum and retired long before he was able to reach that stage.
I give Pryor props for his wins over two greats in Cervantes and Arguello, but we also shouldn't overlook the fact that they were aging fighters by the time Pryor got to them. Cervantes was a 140 fight veteran, while Arguello was a 90 fight veteran moving up to a division he never had much success at. And as talented as Pryor was, his tendency to fight with his hands down at his waist and his often reckless aggression would have been dangerous against a guy of the caliber of Chavez. If journeymen like Dujan Johnson and Kameda were able to stagger and drop Pryor, you'd better believe Chavez could have him in serious trouble. I just don't see Pryor going 15 rounds against Chavez without getting hurt and dropped several times. It would have been a war for sure, but if anyone is scoring a ko, it's Chavez.
Aaron Pryor will win this fight on point. I remember Aaron Pryor win over Alexis Arguello. The Hawk throw alot of punches and his chin was solid. Then I remember Julio Ceasar Chavez was behind on point against Meldrick Taylor because he couldn't deal with Meldrick hand speed until he got lucky in the final second of the last round. Aaron will do the same to J.C but there will be no lucky punch because Aaron has a better chin than Meldrick Taylor. Aaron Pryor by unanimous decision.
Pryor probably was the greatest junior welterweight fighter ever. Chavez was at his most vulnerable at 140 lbs. almost losing by shut out to Meldrick Taylor if not for a very and controversial late stoppage, getting a gift draw against Pernell Whitaker who everybody but the judges saw as the clear winner, getting a gift decision but later losing to Frankie Randall and getting busted and stopped twice by Oscar de la Hoya. He held wins against Roger Mayweather, Hector Camacho and Greg Haugen but those were blown up lightweights at best.
Let's not kid ourselves. At 140 lbs.,prime time Pryor would have been the first man to kayo Chavez. His results against the great Antonio Cervantes and Alexis Arguello should be convincing enough.
Pretty sure Chavez
pryor was a great fighter but unreliable ...chavez wins.
Another patented toughguy match up that is all but impossible to call, so I will opt out by calling it a draw.
Its to close of a fight to call the winner but if I was a betting man I'd stick a few $
