Is boxing having one world title an impossible idea?

It's not impossible but it isn't as good of an idea as it would seem, most sports have more than one 'title' football has 2 domestic cups, the league and various European/continental cups. Golf/Tennis/snooker etc have different tournaments. If there was only one title in each division of boxing it would be possible for one person to be the only person to make decent money for 10 years, I realize this is already pretty much what happens but to a lesser degree. I suppose you could argue having one title would force all the top people to fight but the only way this would work to any effect (as far as I can see) is if the ranking system became more like a league and every time the title is made vacant they have a tournament rather than the arbitrarily decided top 2 fight.

In summation there is a lot more that could be done while keeping several titles but you're right it would be easier to control if there was one governing body or at least they had to come up with one set of rules that they all follow every time.

I think it's possible. There was a time when the WBA, WBC and IBF recognized Larry Holmes and Marvelous Marvin Hagler as their common beltholders, which made them undisputed champion. The then fairly new IBF automatically adopted Holmes seeing the inanity and futility of holding a tournament among lesser lights to come up with its own champion.

But today we already have four recognized major world sanctioning bodies to include the WBO which also recognizes its own champion in each division. However, seeing how WBO is open to sanctioning unification fights especially with WBA and even IBF and WBC, I think coming up with one unified champion is a possibility.

I think if only the world boxing bodies will only subordinate their parochial interests to the greater good of boxing, they can form a strong federation or boxing cartel which can bring back to them the control of international pro boxing and away from rapacious business promoters and their media and national/.state partners like the Top Rank and Golden Boy which is the main sole source of dysfunction in international pro boxing since the late 90s.

I can live with one or two powerful, even dictatorial world governing body/ies controlling and regulating but giving sanity to international pro boxing than the babel of confusion we now have as a result of feuding promoters and ridiculously free market boxing industry which continuously delude the fans with paper champions while failing to give us the important fights we have been demanding..

First of all WBC IBO WBA etc aren't going to stop but they are respected differently WBC is the best of them this is what the top boxers aim for. Boxers are always going to get paid differently because of agreements and the pay they have to give to their team and training.

It's possible if boxing was reformed by one super power ,sort of like the UFC and Dana White but i seriously doubt it will happen anytine soon.

well, being undisputed is similar to that idea since the undisputed champ is the lone holder of that title in a division, but I must admit, one world title sounds more glorious...

Difficult to get all the egos of the sanctioning bodies to pull together.

However, Formula One car racing manages to do it. (Maybe only because of the personality and balance sheet of Bernie Ecclestone.)

I actually want HBO, ESPN, and Showtime to join up and fight.

w/ all the world sunctioning bodies doin the rankings of fighters all over the globe and then unites to organize one world title more like of the FIFA?

if this happens, what will happen to the promoters and ppv networks?

will the top fighters be a able to earn the same?
