Not necessarily ,Canelo has big shoes to fill to be as great as Roberto Duran or Julio Cesar Chavez.
If Canelo does beat Floyd Mayweather by decision there will probably be a rematch unless theres a devastating KO involved which seem unlikely.
No. Nothing "automatically" makes you an ATG. That consideration is given after the career is or say in the case of Hopkins, because of the longevity and level of competition. If Alvarez beats Mayweather convincingly, then it would show that he has the skills to take on the best of his time and would put him close to the top of the current game. He would still need to continue fighting and mostly beating the best competition. If you consider two Mexican greats, JCC Sr. and Salvador Sanchez. Chavez was 87 and 0 before his first loss. Sanchez beat a host of other great fighters and did so with notable skill over his WAY too short career. Alvarez has already fought 43 times as another poster said, but his opposition has not been at all, that of other Mexican greats.
@ Kool K. - Roberto Duran is Panamanian. I am sure he would be upset at being considered to be a Mexican great. Even though we all speak Spanish, we are funny that way about our Nationality.
No beating 1 great fighter will not make him a the greatest Mexican fighter of all time it's about beating a multiple of solid competition and title defenses usually is what qualifies for that status however if he manages to beat Mayweather which is possible believe it or not then he will be the new face of boxing.
One fight does not define a fighter. That's why I get so mad when I see stupid articles like "Floyd will cement his legacy with win over Canelo" as if that one victory will amount to more than he has done his entire career.
Not at all, but I have to admit I like where the kids head is.
Having 43 wins at 23 years old makes him an old school guy. He likes to fight.
He could end up being a great just on sheer record...if he keeps fighting at this pace.
Of course knocking Mayweather out, as unlikely as that would be.....would DEFINITELY put him WAY up there.
Of course not, it doesn't matter how this fight turns out, one fight will not erase the careers of guys like Chavez Sr. Salvador Sanchez or even Carlos Zarate. Canelo is good, but he isn't anywhere near that good.
good question...cuz marquez instantly became a national hero for beating pac...
canelo might be canonized for sainthood if ever he beats floyd
If he wins against Floyd.
PARTY-TIME!
mw wins this one quite easily
No! Not even close.
Does that automatically make him the greatest mexican fighter of all time? I don't think he will, but wouldn't this be true?
