Ernie just hit way too hard and Georges limited footwork would be his downfall and this fight would end before the 10th round. the one thing I will say, this fight would be a war for the first half of the fight.
Thanks for the great question about two good Heavies
Good match up sir! Earnie Shavers vs George Chuvalo is all there you could ask for in a dream fight and Ali had to comment on both fighters " being the hardest puncher/ toughest fighter I ever fought". This is a war of attrition indeed.
The Fight
- Earnie catches George big time in the early round and to his surprise Chuvalo just eat 'em up. George returns the favor and shook Shavers exposing his not so good chin. Chuvalo gains confidence stalking the stalker in Earnie in the middle rounds and the latter appearing to having gassed out sends a thunderous right and cuts George. Shavers then capitalize on the cuts but Chuvalo is really one tough *** never giving an inch to the very exhausted Earnie. In the 12th,George was all bloodied and finally the ref steps to a halt. It was only the third time in the Canadian champion's career that he will stopped via TKO. George Chuvalo remains standing as he will never ever taste a knock down even by the most vicious puncher faced in front of him. What a great fight!
I gotta agree with Bundini, if Jerry Quarry could KO Earnie Shavers, Chuvalo could as well. George Chuvalo was one of the toughest heavyweights of the golden era of the heavyweight division with a chin like a fire hydrant and an offense that generated almost as many KO's as Shavers, in truth they almost had identical records. The elite boxers of the era beat both, but a straight ahead slugger like Shavers would have had loads of trouble with Chuvalo's iron chin, I think Chuvalo would have been the favorite and Shavers the underdog had they fought.
I think I'd go with Chuvalo. Shavers, for all his punching power, had crude skills and lacked ring IQ. Ali was close to getting knocked out but outsmarted Shavers who thought Ali was just playing hurt. Chuvalo was one of the toughest heavyweight ever. He had the hardest chin and an incredible stamina. I think he'd take Shavers' punch, hang on, score points and rally for a split decision win.
