Yeah. Gamboa has always been pretty erratic. He'll either look like the best fighter on the planet, or he'll look unfocused and dull.
He's just mentally not there. Dude has all the physical skills in the world, but sometimes it's like he doesn't care and is just trying to cruise.
It's not even the weight jump either, he's always been this way ever since he turned pro. Looks like an exciting, ridiculously talented beast against Jorge Solis, then looks unimpressive and boring against Ponce De Leon.
This is two lackluster fights in a row for him. 135lb is a horrible division, so he'll be okay for now, but if he keeps jumping weight or somebody dangerous shows up, he'll be in trouble IMO.
I have to agree with the other posters. Gamboa is a very naturally talented fighter, but I think that he is a the pinnacle of his craft at this point. He has never been too serious about his preparation like his Cuban compatriot Rigondeaux. He has always relied more on his athleticism to get him through fights.
I think that he may be in trouble in the near future. 130 isn't too dangerous right now, although fighters like Garcia and Mares and Rigo and Donaire will eventually end up there. I am not sure he can still make 130 though, and be effective. He can't go up to 140 yet because there are monsters up there. I agree that his best bet is to stay put for a bit and see if he really wants to put in the time and effort to be elite.
Yes, Gamboa has looked less impressive. The skills are all still there, but he looks a little hesitant to throw and get into an exchange, maybe the fear of being countered and dropped. (which we've seen)
He may not be fighting at 135 for too long, as Perez had him thinking all night. He looked very average, for being such an athletic talent.
He should move back down to 130.
That was a boring *** fight, I have to admit. As Stick said, he's never been the most consistent fighter out there, he's a guy who needs a good dance partner to really get going. I wouldn't be surprised if he came out in his next fight looking like a proper champion.
Gamboa that pushy is scared to fight Adrianna Gamboa's problem Broner. Might as well curl up and run his @ss back to Q-Ba.
At this point, I am even inclined to say Nonito Donaire could knock his *** out. Rigondaeux is far superior than Gamboa.
