Spinks possess the power to end a fight with one punch. However, he did have some weaknesses.............besides Tyson.
.
What we have to take into consideration is that Spinks was never really seriously challenged at 175. This was partly because he was simply dominant and partly because the best fighters in the division, at that time, had already vacated the division.
.
There is no one at 175, at that time, who can compare to Ezzard Charles. Qawi is a good puncher but he doesn't use his power nearly as well as did Charles. Saad Muhammad would likely have lost to Spinks but he would have severely challenged him and it's no guarantee that Spinks would win.
.
Charles is more accurate than Muhammad and makes better use of his power than Qawi does. There is really no one else at 175 even worth mentioning, in regards to comparisons to Charles. They were good fighters. However, again, Spinks stood well over all of them.
.
Charles would have no trouble reaching Spinks or surviving his power. Spinks would have a good puncher's chance but Charles simply has too many weapons and Spinks simply wouldn't have the answers.
.
It's just a matter of time.

Charles by TKO in 14.
At 6'2" I'd pick Michael Spinks over Ezzard Charles. After Charles accidently killed someone in the ring he wasn't the same devastating puncher, therefore, IMO, Spinks win most likely by UD
Prime time Ezzard Charles was the best light heavyweight fighter ever. He was a compleat fighter who could both box and punch noted for his textbook approach to fighting. Charles was so smooth that Muhammad;Ali even confessed to admiring and being influenced by him as much as another great, Sugar Ray Robinson. Ali even said he copied some of his moves from Charles.
Charles and Robinson by the way were contemporaries but they never got to fight because by the time Sugar was ready to move up, Charles was already campaigning in the heavyweights. It was another case of what could have been as happened later with Foster-Monzon and Spinks-Hagler.
Anyway, despite Spinks feat of being the first reigning light heavyweight champion to win the heavyweight crown from an aging, jaded larry Holmes, his overall ring record does not compare with Ezzard's. In term of fighting style and capabilities, Spinks was also inferior to Charles both at light heavyweights and heavyweights.
Charles beats Spinks by UD 15.
