Question I: Hell no would be my answer, but to play devil's advocate I'm gonna say yes.
It's possible Virgil has the confidence in a certain game plan and he thinks Khan has the physical gifts capable of executing it. Clearly that's a high order though, and despite his many abilities Khan has shown to be limited in many respects. Considering we all know that, Hunter obviously knows it as well.
Question II: Nothing at all, unless of course getting beat around the ring and barely beating an old/blown up lightweight in Julio Diaz was somehow encouraging. Khan has looked like complete sh*t ever since Garcia put him down with that first hook he landed.
Question III: Fooling himself or not, money makes the world go round and Virgil will spew as much nonsense as necessary to sell this fight and get that check, whether or not he naturally believes it.
Although I don't think Virgil Hunter is very bright, I do think he has a point. Khan, although he doesn't deserve a shot at Mayweather, will cause problems for Mayweather........early on. So did Zab Judah and Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley and a host of other "would-be Mayweather conquerors".
.
Now, what do all those guys have in common? Well, besides the fact that they all Lost, each was taken out of his game plan. To say that Mayweather is the best, does't mean he can't be troubled. You have guys walking around thinking that Marcos Maidana can beat Floyd, based on his drubbing of Adrien Broner, whom I've never thought had much in common, as a fighter, with Mayweather.
.
Khan will use his speed, height and reach to trouble Mayweather. This will last for a few rounds. However, look at his track record. Khan, like Mosley before him, can't stick with a game plan. He becomes knockout happy around the middle rounds. This will spell disaster for him against Mayweather.
.
Khan has the tools to make it interesting. He just lacks the smarts. That is what Virgil Hunter isn't smart enough to see or figure out.
.
Mayweather W12 UD (unless CJ Ross shows up again).
Q1: I think any fighter that fights Mayweather has a shot at dethroning him ,all it take is one mistake and one good shot ,Marquez/Pacquiao 4 is the perfect example. I think Virgil Hunter has a lot of confidence in his game plan.
Q2: Virgil Hunter figures that Mayweather hasn't been against a fighter with speed of Amir Khan in a while ,Khan himself has said speed is Mayweather's kryptonite.
Q3: Hunter admitted that Khan has just as good footwork and muscle twitch as Floyd does but the only difference is that Floyd's footwork and muscle twitch is more "educated" meaning it comes more as second nature for Floyd and it's more ingrained into Floyd's fundamentals.
Q1. Probably not. I'm sure he believes that he has a plan that could take out an aging Floyd, but I seriously doubt if he feels his guy has the combination of skills, athleticism and intelligence to do it.
Q2 & 3. What happened? The facts of life came around and slapped him in the face. If Hunter (or any trainer in a similar position) got on their high horse and killed a huge payday they would be fired. He has a choice get on board with where his manager & promoter want to lead his career or quit. He's doing the right thing by eating the stupid statements he previously made and continuing to work with Khan.
As a coach you never EVER publicly state your team or athlete can't compete with peers no matter how true it may be because it conflicts with everything a good coach instills in athletes in preparation for competition and puts a huge dose of doubt into the subconscious of everyone within the organization. I don't care if it's boxing, football, basketball, baseball, soccer or anything else, in sport it takes unity around a core belief that victory can be theirs! Sure you praise the opponent (in this case great fighter) and how tough it would be for anyone to compete with them, but if you have to tell someone your team or athlete can't do it either share it with your wife or a close confidant that knows how to keep their mouth shut.
No.......but the $$$$$ opportunity justifies it.
Before Khan was mentioned as a possible Mayweather opponent, Virgil Hunter stated that Khan was nowhere near ready to fight Floyd...
Now that there is a good chance that the fight will be made... Hunter is giving Khan every chance of causing an upset..
Now.. I have always considered Hunter a straight shooter, he doesn't play up to the media, he doesn't mince his words, he calls it as he see's it...
Question (1) Does Virgil Hunter genuinely feel that Khan has a shot at dethroning Moneymay?
Question (2) What could have happened between the Molina fight and now, to make Hunter change his mind..?
Question (3) Is Hunter fooling himself to get the big fight percentage..??
