I really wish, but I'm no so confident...boxing is all about the styles of fighting that each man brings to the table. As Larry Merchant used to say on HBO, "Styles make fights." A slugger might be at an advantage or disadvantage in a fight, depending on whether he is fighting another slugger or a more defensive-minded fighter. The style of this fight does not bode well for Canelo. I will discuss why:
1) Canelo is a classic plodding fighter who looks to take his opponents apart by breaking them down with heavy shots. He tries to load up on big shots, one at a time (much like guys such as Sonny Liston and Joe Frazier did as heavyweights)...this is not good against Mayweather, because...
2)...Mayweather is a defense-first fighter who makes his opponents miss and then pot shots them to death. He might be the greatest defensive fighter ever (and according to Compubox statistics, he is the least hit fighter in history). You can't hurt what you can't hit. Mayweather has great head movement and rolls his shoulders to avoid being punched. Canelo will be in for a long night, and will get frustrated early if he can't land on Floyd...if that happens, he is playing right into Floyd's game.
3) Canelo has a tendency to get hit way too much for a fighter of his caliber. He does not pay much heed to defense. While Mayweather is not a hard puncher, being hit a lot is still going to cost you rounds on the judge's cards.
I pick Mayweather by unanimous decision...unless Canelo gets lucky and lands some thundering shots early that rock Floyd and get his attention to disrupt his game plan. I am pulling for Canelo in this fight, but you gotta face the facts.
Jack,
Why not? Let me tell you something, THERE IS NO SUBSITUTE FOR YOUTH. With that said (written) There's always the aging Champ and the young up and comer. History is full of fights to support this. There was nothing uglier than a aging Ali fight a young gifted, no fear Spinks of course Ali came back and beat the snot out of Leon but that's a matter for another discussion.
Any fighter who ever entered the ring has only so many punches he/she can take before they turn old right before your very eyes. Maybe, just maybe Floyd has gone to the well one too many times.
The last thing to go on any fighter is his/her punch. The legs can be shot. The head movement could be nonexistent, but the punch will always be there. The thing about that is Floyd has never been a ONE SHOT FIGHTER he has always been about volume. Canelo on the other hand has one shot power.
I'm hoping that Canelo waxes Floyd's bean, but I'm of the opinion that Canelo is two or three fights away from being ready to face Floyd and beat Floyd. Canelo has youth and POWER on his side and that's enough to make go to Vegas and watch the maybe.
Here's to hoping Jack
lets weigh it then:
1) canelo is a not swarmer but a puncher and we all know boxers beats punchers
2) canelo got some stamina issue, the catchweight will ensure it when he gas-out probably on the late rounds
3) canelo aint got the move to avoid floyd's counter punchin, he'll get hit a lot
4) canelo aint got the speed to hit floyd, so he'll miss a lot
5) canelo got a good chin so he wont go down, nor cut since floyd barely cuts his opponent due to his floppy gloves and brittle hands
6) canelo got power on his punches though, but how many times did floyd got hit and wobbled? what fighters were able to land a bomb on floyd, is canelo elite as mosley and cotto?
7) canelo got the size advantage and power punches, the only way to utilize it is to follow what cotto did, push floyd to the rope and drop those bombs while he still got gas... cuz after it rans out due to the catchweight, floyd's speed will be doubled and win the night by another boring decision while all the flomos glorifies how great his defense was and how accurate his punches were against a drained snail like canelo
There is always a shot because no one is invincible, but it is a very small chance. Power and size are great but it means nothing if you can't connect. Mayweather will be able to use his shoulder roll more effectively now that he isn't fighting a southpaw. He also appears to be able to move around when he has too and is still very fast for his age.
Alvarez can put some great combinations together but no one really lands a clean punch on Mayweather, much less a combination of punches. We will have to see. This could be night Mayweather shows his age or maybe he will remain unbeaten. We will see.
I don't think so. But I think it will be a good fight. Also, I think will deserve a rematch.

He's a big guy, but that's what they said about Ortiz. And yes I remember the cheap shot ending. Can Alvarez breakdown Floyd's defense and give him his first loss?
