Do lighter boxers have better stamina than heavier boxers?

There are three factors that determine stamina. Age, Weight, Conditioning.

On average, lighter boxers normally have better stamina. There are some differences and exceptions. I look at today's heavyweights, even the best of them, and they seem to fight in slow motion compaired to the best of the 70s. Even Muhammad ALI, who was well past his prime, fought at a faster pace than today's bigger heavyweights.

Lighter weight fighters tend to have better stamina. However, conditioning has a great deal to do with stamina. It might even be a more important factor than weight. Lets look at two other examples.

Marvin Hagler and Roberto Duran. Hagler was the bigger man. However, Hagler was in his natural class while Duran was past his prime and 2 or 4 classes past his best. This depends on whether or not you consider 135 or 147 to be his best. I always felt that Duran, great as he was at 135, could have been even better at 147 had he showed more discipline. In any case, he is a great example of both scenarios.

The second example is Floyd Mayweather and the third factor that might determine stamina. Mayweather is 36 years old. However, it's not likely that you will find a better 36 year old fighter in history. He is still very near his best and clearly the best in his division and perhaps the entire sport. This is because Floyd has always taken care of his body. He is a gym rat by nature and he has never been known to abuse his body in any way. Even the great Sugar Ray Leonard had his brief issues with substances.

On average, lighter weight fighters have better stamina. However, Age and Conditioning are also equally important factors.

It really depends on the person, because a heavier boxer could be healthier, the lighter boxer could be a smoker, have a poor diet, etc. But generally, yes, a lighter boxer would have better stamina than a heavier boxer.

Not necessarily...It's all about conditioning. Marciano could go 20 rounds.

This depends on genetics.
