Golden Boy as a result have all but said "fine we'll work with Showtime and leave you two (HBO/Top Rank) together over there.
The mess came about because Mayweather basically had the two companies bidding for his signature. Al Haymon had been using Mayweather as a major bargaining chip for his fighters on HBO, it was why fighters like Berto, Alexander and Broner were being payed inflated purses.
In terms of the promoters making less money, I dare say they are making more as many more match ups will be "in house". If I promote 1 guy from a fight I get a cut of the revenue, if I promote bother fighters I get a bigger cut of the revenue.
In terms of the biggest fights. There are a few that will fall by the wayside, though on the flip neither promoter wants to put on a bad show and they are all seemingly happy to work with other promoters (Banner Promotions for example promote Provodnikov or Matchroom Sports who promote Kell Brook).
You're right that it COULD damage the sport. The flip is, as I said, both promoters put on their game faces and we get stacked cards. It's hard to complain about the shows the promoters have this coming Saturday with Top Rank having a fantastic card in Macau and Golden Boy having a brilliant card later in the day in the US.
That's as much as I can gather too. IMO the problem is that stupid people that only want the money or the fun are joining and becoming promoters like Mayweather's Money Team or like Mike Tyson is trying to do right now. It would be better if we had sensible people behind such companies, not clowns!
Not that I dislike Mayweather or Tyson though! Let's how Tyson's promotions turns out!
Unfortunatly, the SPORT of boxing is fading quickly... More and more it's turning into a business. We have fighter like Rigo unable to get the fights and promotion he DESERVES for actually BOXING, yet we have amateurs like Donaire who get all the promotion in the world, even if they lose, just because they lunge in throwing random punches hoping for a KO.
Any street wannabe can be a pro boxer by that logic. Teach him how to throw a hook and that's it.
its a joke, and you would think modern promotions would be so much easier with Youtube and the Internet, but moder promoter have failed to maximize their audiences
Don King could do a better job filling arenas in the 80s....
so could Tex Ricard in the 20s
weres flask kd when you need him?he could break this down for ya.i ent got a clue though
I don't really understand it. from what I can gather, top rank and goldenboy are refusing to match each others fighters? so its basically just two rival promoters not willing to do deals right? and what the hell is with HBO now too? I thought they are just a tv station that show all kinds of crap? how can they have a say in which specific fighters they are willing to televise?
and why has this whole mess came about? surely the two promotion companys are not only killing boxing but on a more important note to them, they must be failing to make a lot more money than they currently are by not making the biggest fights happen?
