see a top Puerto Rican prospect rise to the occasion and step up in
class and make a name for himself facing an elite fighter. Gonzalez
had Ricky Burns in a world of trouble Jose was clearly up in the fight
was landing the most significant punches. However, in the end Ricky
Burns didn't fold under the pressure he stood strong and toughed the
fight out and hung in their til the end. We don't know what would have
happen if Jose Gonzalez would of decided to finish thte fight using one
hand? We saw Jean Pascal fight Aleksy Kuziemski and win using his
right hand landing power punches. However, I believe Ricky Burns was
on the verge of making a comeback and perhaps if Jose Gonzalez had
chosen to continue fighting Ricky Burns could have gotten the dramatic
stoppage. It's good to see a prospect make a name for himself and his
presence known on the big stage. Thomas Dulorme couldn't get it done
with Luis Carlos Abregu, Luis Del Valle couldn't make it happen with Vic
Darchinyan and Jonathan Gonzalez did not prove anything in his outing
with Sergiy Dzinziruk. Jose Gonzalez almost defeated Ricky Burns on
that night and we could of had a new WBO Lightweight Champion and I
really hope he gives Gonzalez a rematch somewhere down the road and
perhaps it's time to see if Ricky Burns can unify the division challenging
the other belt holders Richard Abril WBA Lightweight Champion and the
IBF Lightweight Champion and it is announced that Omar Figueroa fights
for the vacant WBC Lightweight title vacated by Adrien Broner, Figueroa's
fighting Nihito Arakawa on July 27th on the undercard of Showtime Boxing.
The Gonzalez camp are citing a suspected broken wrist... I assume this is a BS excuse to lay on the awaiting media...
Ricky Burns has got off lightly... Let's not kid ourselves (He was nearly popped in round 7)
Burns did good to overcome a skilful Gonzalez, an elite challenger wouldn't give him that opportunity...
yes bizarre ending ricky out toughed him and broke his heart but lets be honest and lets not kid ourselves gonzalez up until he quit he was totally and utterly exposing ricky burns gonzalez was stronger, quicker, harder puncher, more accurate puncher and a better thinking fighter and counter puncher than ricky burns but gonzalez completely gassed himself out in the 7 round and when he seen ricky burns still standing after landing his best shots he lost heart and was exhausted so well done to ricky burns for showing heart and determination but lets be honest gonzalez totally exposed burns in this fight. i think ricky burns has found out his level now and should forget about fighting people like broner
Yeah, that was bizarre.
Gonzalez was owning Ricky and hurt him bad on a couple of occasions. I think Burns was rusty for sure, but Gonzalez showed good power/skill.
I think after that seventh round (sick round btw) Gonzalez was gassed. He was still up on the cards for sure though, and it's bizarre he'd quit and lose his undefeated record/give up on a world title that way.
Yeah that was just weird. I am not judging this guy but he clearly doesn't have the heart to be a world champion. Fighters fight with broken wrists, hands, arms, ribs, etc. all the time, you have to overcome that. EX: Floyd Mayweather Jr.
come on guyz...i said before the fight gonzales to pull upset...powers that be didnt want it so strings were prob pulled....p.s havent seen it yet but expected gonzales to win or come close.
What did you make of this fight?
Burns looked very rusty and didn't look like his normal self. I thought Gonzalez looked good and could become a player in the division, although that could just have been Burns making him look good.
The fight was slipping away from Ricky until the 7th when they went toe to toe. Ricky seemed to come out on top and Gonzalez gassed out badly. After that I thought Ricky had the fight won but the ending was very strange. Gonzalez took rounds 8 and 9 off and then quit on his stool, with his corner telling him to keep going.
Gonzalez had a very relaxed style, great reach and good movement. Ricky looked very sluggish and was just coming straight forward with no variation. However, the main weapons in Ricky's arsenal are stamina and heart. He dug deep and showed that it was going to be a war until the end.
It will be interesting to hear from Gonzalez and see what his reasons for quitting were.
Not a good performance from Ricky but he ground out the result.
