The business answer is when the new crop of sharks in the division beat each other up to the point of losing confidence and he can no longer make 154. He's been a middleweight the whole time in terms of body type and weight, but he simply doesn't have the requisite skills to be anything more than an opponent at that weight. He has slow hands and feet, isn't a great tactician and wouldn't be an explosive puncher at 160.
Q2- Golden Boy will try to milk him at 154 as long as possible, hoping for a lightning strike to overcome their pisspoor promotion of him in the U.S. The problem is there are no names at 154 that could catapult him into superstardom with a victory and the Floyd fight stole all the hype GBP had built.
I think if Alvarez moves to 160 he will only be affective against mediocre opposition. Remember the Stevens vs. Golovkin fight? ALvarez is 5'7" like Stevens but Stevens has faster hands and feet than Alvarez, and Stevens got picked apart by Golovkin. I think it would have been even worse if Alvarez were fighting Golovkin or Quillen. Alvarez is not fast enough nor does he have the proper reach to fight the 6'0 tall guys at 160. He might do well, but not vs the top of the class. When guys move up in weight they very rarely take the power with them. Hearns scored very few KOs once he went to 160 and 168, and Alvarez IMHO is not as good as Hearns.
People need to stop carrying on like GBP promotions somehow threw him to the wolves by pitting him against a fighter that posed an actual threat. Broner's limitations as a fighter were evident to everyone but his biased fans that were blinded by his self hype. If Maidana hadn't exposed those limitations at 147, it would have happened against the top dogs at 140, who pose just as much, if not a greater threat than Maidana.
I also don't understand why people feel GBP should have continued matching him with tailor made opponents, when just earlier this year, they matched two of their top young stars with opponents they were favored to lose to (Garcia vs Matthysse coming off a devastating ko win and Canelo vs p4p no 1 champ at a catchweight no less). But somehow, GBP should have protected Broner against Maidana (a fighter he was favored to beat)??? SMH
After he beats Lara, Alvarez still has big things to do at 154 like win titles back and unify them. But I'm pretty sure if Cotto beats Martinez, Canelo will move up in weight to 160 and challenge cotto for his titles. Canelos stamina should be better at a higher weight.
I think Saul alveraz should worry about the 154 division because he is not ready to move up. He have the size but he don't have the experience. He have 1 big win in his division and a move to 160 will be too fast. Goldenboy will not let that happen.
I think things like this should be up to the fighter.
Canelo knows his weight better than anyone else. He should stay at 154lb until he physically can't make the weight, or at least has filled in a little bit before moving to middleweight.
After the Broner failure at 147, will Golden Boy be slower to move Alvarez to 160?
