It's no brainer. Because of his experience. He needs to play it safe, by feeling him out for the firrst 4 rounds. Once He feels him out, he should go for key shots for a late KO or decision.. If he fall behind and its late. Why not just go for the KO.

@stick and move

" They were already expected to fight actually, it was either they were going to fight and Gary got hurt or (what I think was what happened) Gonzalez just straight up turned down the fight."

What are you TMZ? lol If you're going to suspect one of these guys of turning down the fight, it should be Russell who has fought nothing but cans. As a matter of fact, he recently turned down a fight with Ponce to fight another TBA (to be announced) opponent.

"I respect Mares, but I don't particularly like him and despite his good record I think he was overrated coming into the Gonzalez fight."

You claim that Mares is overrated despite the fact that he's beaten quality opposition, but then you predict Russell (who hasn't faced anyone with a pulse) would knock out both Mares and Gonzalez??? It sounds more like Russell is the one being overrated here. Russell has shown decent skills, but anyone can shine against bums. We won't know how good he is until he finally grows a pair and steps up his level of opposition. But I will say it's not a good sign that he's shown reluctance to do so in the past, and also has a reputation for having brittle hands. There's been buzz about him stepping up lately, but we'll have to wait if it actually materializes or if it's just talk as usual.

It's hard to say, b/c GRJR has shown extreme talent and speed, but against terrible competition.

I think he'd knock out Gonzalez. Jhonny has a bad chin, he's only been stopped three times but he gets knocked down a lot and two fights ago almost got knocked by a guy who was like 22-12 and only had like eight knockouts on his record.

Russell Jr would be able to hit Gonzalez early and take him out IMO. They were already expected to fight actually, it was either they were going to fight and Gary got hurt or (what I think was what happened) Gonzalez just straight up turned down the fight.

It's just a bad matchup for Jhonny, a really bad one.

I think GRJR would knockout Mares. I respect Mares, but I don't particularly like him and despite his good record I think he was overrated coming into the Gonzalez fight.

Gary could KO or outbox Mares for sure.

@Rip: First off, everyone is aware Russell turned down a PDL fight, and secondly I already stated his resume consists of sh*tty fighters.

TMZ? lol okay, go ahead and google it or something. Gonzalez turned down a GRJR fight, or he agreed and then someone got hurt. Just b/c I'm not sure which it was doesn't make it false, though I'm pretty sure Jhonny turned down the offer.

And yes, despite beating quality opponents I felt like Mares was overrated. He's always been a guy who wins but fades and looks bad during significant stretches of his fights.

He'll get tired out of nowhere, he's dirty, he isn't as skilled as people make him out to be, he gets hit easily. Despite all that he puts it together well, but he has a lot of weakness and him being a 13-1 favorite over Gonzalez was pathetic and laughable.

I think Gary would beat both. Neither guy has defense, and Jhonny has a bad chin. Russell Jr is probably the fastest fighter in boxing, he would take Jhonny just like Nishioka did. It's not about resume, it's about style. GRJR has a style that would be extremely difficult for both Mares and Gonzalez to deal with.

Cry about my post if you want. Please, prove me wrong.

He has a great chance at beating Gonzalez since he flat out cant fight southpaws. he just cat fight southpaws and Gary Russel is one of the most talented southpaws in the game.

I dont think so, but maybe in future
