Mares got caught and floored violently by a huge, wicked punch by Gonzales and when Gonzales does that, he will never let the opponent off the hook if the latter beats the count. Gonzales has learned his lesson of not going for the kill and just content himself with toying with his amaller opponent when Gerry Penalosa KO'd him with a single shot to the ribs some years back. He was winning that fight by a mile but he allowed Penalosa to snatch the win by exploiting his tentativeness in that fateful seventh round. Gonzales has always gone for the home run or decisive points win since then. The smaller Mares had no chance after getting his whisker severely checked by a full grown, skilled featherweight with a high KO ratio. The referee knew that.
Mares barely looked able to get up after the first one. He should have clinched or taken a knee to survive the round.
The second knockdown was just as brutal and although he was responsive, he was wobbly as fuc k and probably could not have survived a further 17 remaining in the round.
Perfect stoppage.
Mares was F*CKED up, dude was still not fully there in the post fight interview. He only would've got hurt worse if it went on, no way he would have recovered even if he got his sixty seconds.
You crazy..?
The man was not in a position to defend himself.. If the ref let it go, he could have been put in intensive care - That's the bottom line in boxing.
No it was a good stoppage
what do you think?
