its the best available option for Miguel Cotto at this stage in this career.
I disagree with boxing fans thinking that Miguel Cotto is a "shot" fighter
he seems to have re-invented himself with his most recent win over the
over matched Delvin Rodriguez. This was similar to that comeback win
over Michael Jennings after suffering his first loss to Antonio Margarito.
In any case Miguel Cotto needed to make a statement and he did just
that he didn't get an easy boring 12 Round victory over Delvin Rodriguez
on HBO Boxing he got a KO in 3 Rounds. Everybody always likes good
comeback stories in professional boxing and Miguel Cotto is writing his.
The Middleweight King Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez would be my choice
to be an opponent for Miguel Cotto. Actually, this fight was supposed to
happen back in March of 2011. Top Rank Boxing made a very low purse
offer to Sergio Martinez promoter Lou DiBella, I think that was something
like 70/30 split the large piece of the pie going to Miguel Cotto and that is
no wonder DBE turned down that bogus offer. And Miguel Cotto ended up
fighting Ricardo Mayorga instead of Sergio Martinez. Top Rank is also, co
promoting Miguel Cotto and we'll know that Golden Boy & Top Rank aren't
co-promoting any boxing events anytime soon however, remember that we
saw Erislandy Lara vs. Vanes Martirosyan which it was a WBC Eliminator
for at the time Alvarez's world title Top Rank promotes Vanes Martirosyan
and Golden Boy Promotions promotes Erislandy Lara. Cotto-Alvarez could
be made however, it would be up to the highest purse bidder for this fight in
which case the previous time this happen, Golden Boy Promotions won the
purse bid and they had sole rights to promote that WBC title eliminator and
Miguel Cotto's loss to Austin Trout was a lot closer and in addition Cotto he
gave Floyd Mayweather Jr. the toughest fight of his career at 154. I think it's
time to see him fight at Middleweight, this would be somewhat similar to how
when Felix Trinidad challenged Bernard Hopkins for his Middleweight crown in
2001. I'm going with Cotto-Martinez live on HBO pay per view for March 2014!
I would choose B ,the big fight with Canelo ,as long as Top Rank politics doesn't get in the way.
Canelo is not a Top Rank fighter ,he a Golden Boy fighter and Canelo also deserves the bigger purse because he's the bigger attraction of the two but you also know how hard the negotiations were between Mayweather and Pacquiao were when Mayweather demanded the bigger portion of the purse ,hopefull the potential Cotto/Canelo fight doesn't turn out the same ,if so ,i see Cotto fighting someone like Carlos Molina or Jessie Vargas.
this fight was nothing more than a facade....
Cotto has been finished since 2009. he was gift wrapped a title in his comeback at 154, and was the benficiary of clever matchmaking.....
to answer your question: he should take the Canelo fight, and probably get manhandled in the process
Cotto has already lost to Mayweather and Trout at 154, settled his score with Margarito, and been destroyed twice at 147
i do not see the supposed demand for a Martinez fight. Martinez is now a full fledged 160 fighter, and he has lost much of his momentum
a 154 fight with Canelo is still very intruiging, and a huge moneymaker pitting a Mexican against a Puetra Rican
also, Canelo is coming off a loss, and Cotto coming off a win, so Cotto will have a lot more negotiating leverage in this fight than he would have a year ago
i would bet Cotto would make a lot more money fighting Canlo than he would Sergio
it won't matter though, Canelo is a true 154 fighter, and he would walk through the shop worn Cotto in 8 rounds
Cotto is a shot fighter but still seems to be able to get talked about as an opponent for the best boxers around. It's a bit like De La Hoya and Trinidad.
Cotto just won a fight against someone who lost to Ashley Theophane. That says it all really. If that gets you back in the mix then boxing is in a bad way.
A fight with Cotto would not enhance the record of any of the top boxers around at this point. If its just about money then Canelo should fight Cotto.
Both Canelo and Sergio are big money fights but i think he should take on Sergio
Sergio has way more mileage and is more vulnerable than 23 year old Canelo so its a more winnable fight for Cotto seeing that Sergio is nearing the end of his HOF career.
Canelo might be improving so taking that fight for more money and more risk to Cotto's health doesn't look like a good idea. Canelo is a big puncher where Sergio more likely to go the distance if he wins. Cotto's not desperate financially to take that kind of risk against Canelo since he is a big draw
Being a virtual free-lancer, Cotto's most possible, doable next fight that will pay the biggest purse would be a Mexico vs. Puerto Rico war bout versus Canelo Alvarez. It could even be projected as an eliminator for a possible challenge for the middleweight crown of either Sergio Martinez or Peter Quillin who is with Golden Boy.I think Alvarez himself would want a quick career recovery after his one-sided loss to Floyd Mayweather and a fight versus Cotto would give him that.
B.
Its the second biggest fight after one with Mayweather and Canelo out of the three is the easiest to beat but in no way will it be easy. I say a 60/40 fight in favour of Cotto because of the experience and we have seen Canelo outclassed by Mayweather due to the experience advantage.
He should get a rematch with Trout, that was his worst fight. I see the old Cotto back, I think he'd beat Trout. After that he should fight Canelo or Maravilla for his last fight.
He would definetly beat Trout by just throwing more punches. He fought Trout's fight trying to outbox him. Cotto would swarm Trout and Canelo proved that he gets uncomfortable when he's attacked. Cotto by UD
I think he would wear Canelo down with body shots, he already has stamina problems. I say Cotto by TKO.
Against Martinez, he would knock him out. That would be more because Sergio is like 40 and is damaged goods. It would still be a great way to end Cotto's career.
Cotto by KO
Take an easy fight then challenge Martinez, no reason to loose to mayweather & I wouldn't fight against Canelo right after he lost to fmj... Maybe in a year but not soon.
Cotto vs Canelo would be big for boxing
I woul actually like him to take another crack at Trout and then Canelo but I would like to see him fight Canelo. That's actually a good fight for both of them.
Cotto is in the best position in the sport right now.
He can do whatever he wants, the guy has no promotional/network obligations.
If you were Cotto, which of these options would you purse?
A) Challenge Martinez for his 160lb lineal title .
B) Fight Canelo in a huge money fight at 154lb
C) Take an easy fight, then be the top contender for a major PPV fight w/ Floyd.
I personally think he should take the Canelo fight. It's a HUGE fight, PR vs Mexico, and IMO by far the fight he has the biggest chance of winning.
What say you?
in reply to c come on man since when does floyd do rematches
if i was him id call out broner because as you know i dont like broner or i might go after a trout rematch because im sure hed like to avenge his loss but of the 3 you listed id like to see him fight canelo the most but id really like to see him knock out broner
and yo id really like your thoughts on me possibly picking up the philly shell defense, do you think it would work good in mma if i use it plus stand sideways in a taekwondo stance so as to not expose my liver. im a south paw i have a 77 reach i like to stay on the outside and hit you with hard shotgun jabs and low kicks. do you think the philly shell might set up head kicks for me? and im a right handed south paw
mosely rocked em and there wasnt a rematch he told ortiz theyd get 1 and didnt
theador makes a great point this isnt a good fight for canelo after that loss canelo could use a tune up!
i also might wanna go after jmm cuz i dont like him either
dont forget my question
Definately Canelo...big money and beatable. Not as dangerous as taking on a Middleweight or Mayweather who already beat him.
B The money, and its a great fight.
Keep fighting until I lose. They are paying him great money even when it's clear he is not the fighter he was.
