Who was your first favorite boxer?

Roberto Duran, and Lennox Lewis

Muhammad ALI. When I was a kid, my mom was a teacher. One of her coworkers dated a member of ALI's enormous entourage.

.

They invited my mom to Deer Lake and she brought me with her. She was a huge ALI fan and whenever he was on TV, no one was allowed to utter a word, including my father.

.

ALI was like a big kid, playing with all the kids in the gym. I still remember the shock I felt when I saw him in person. You'd have to be living under a rock to now know who he was. This was shortly before he beat George Foreman to regain the title. He seemed bigger than life and think that experience is a big reason why I'm not really fazed by celebrities today. What tops that?

.

The thing I remember most is that soon after that, ALI became the most recognized face on the planet. Yet, he remained as down to earth as one of his stature could be.

.

Judge him as you will but there is no way in the world that you can ever appreciate ALI if you've never had the experience of meeting him in person. I almost feel sorry for those who never have. Like many, ALI was my introduction to boxing.

I';m old school and my first real favorite was the pre Ali, Sonny Liston. He was a force, regarded by his peers as just about unbeatable. His two controversial fights with Ali, especially the second fight in Lewiston Maine ruined his legacy as one of the greatest. Tyson said that Liston was the only fighter he would have feared. Foreman sparred with Liston and said Sonny was the only fighter that could back him up with just one punch.Louis said Liston had the meanest jab in history and if they were to have fought in their prime, he wouldn't jab with Liston. When Liston fought Wayne Bethea in 1958 he scored a TKO stoppage . Later, a dentist had to remove 16 teeth from Bethea's mouth that were either broke off at the gum, split down the middle or knocked completely out. People only remember Liston by his two fights with Ali. Most all feel he was made to throw the second fight and this sealed his legacy.

Sugar Ray Robinson.

Growing up, Ali was the most recognizable face on earth. So yes, it's gotta be Ali.

Archie Moore is probably on the top, but I have a lot of guys I watched that are favorites of mine.

Of course our original Pinoy pride, Flash Elorde.

Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao
