I see fighters like welterweight Mosely and cotto, lightweight Marquez giving Duran a lot of problems,
Oscar de la Hoya- people give him a pass when comes to his losses because they were controversial and fought all the great fighters of his era, a fighter shouldn't be given a special pass because he fought all greats of the era, that should be expected from any elite fighter, better promoter than as a fighter
Manny Pacquio- his best years in my opinion when he fought In the superfeather weight division but his accomplishments at the welterweight division are overrated, fought a drained de la Hoya, ducked Mosely after he destroyed maragarito but fights him after he lost to mayweather and had a horrendous fight against mora, won a 154 lb title from margrito who won the title from Robert Garcia
Mike Tyson- yes he was a knockout machine but people dismiss his career after prison because he wasn't in his "prime", the word prime is the most overused word in boxing, was Marquez in his prime when he ko pacquio, was mayweather in his prime when he outclassed a young canelo, is Hopkins in his prime? NO, these fighters had consistency over ther careers and dedecation to their craft unlike Tyson who's prime by people's standards was from 87-90, other than this ko over spinks what other marquee win did he had?
Sergio Martinez- he is a exciting fighter to watch but he is a predictable fighter, jab left hand, jab left hand, jab left hand and got tagged reapetly by straight hands by Murray, mackllin, and barker average fighters that you expect Martinez to defeat rather easily those same punches that cintron landed on martinez meaning his defense is very flawed never improve, he'll get destroyed by golovkin and mayweather
Most people in the past are over-rated. Because people like to feed off history and legacy's. For me:
Sugar ray robinson - people say he was untouchable yet he did lose although I still say he is top 3 but because there is not much video evidence, I cant say he is the best but most people and everyone under the age of 48 never actually seem him live in action. A lot of people will give me downs for this.
Roberto Duran - tried to watch as many fights as I could I just found him boring and nothing special as people make out.
Mike Tyson - one of my favourite boxers and I believe he could of been better if he didnt go off the rails early in his career but still over rated as didnt beat much of the best competition.
Rocky marciano - Good in his era but didnt beat no real competition and wouldnt make it in the all time greats definitely
Everyone Mayweather fights - everyone he fights, the public try to say they will beat him and what wonderful things they have and will do, yet they fail time and time again.
Well Pacquiao after the Margarito fight, some called him the greatest ever which made him extremely overrated. I do like PAC but his fans have overrated him so badly thats why I have him where hes at.
Wladamir Klitchko is severly overrated, hes only where hes at because of his size and hes very limited as far as having few punches in his arsenal and only being able to fight at long range. Unlike his brother who has real boxing skills that would carry him in any division
Roy Jones deserves a mention, now he was one of the best at his era but he faced extremely limited opposition and never faced his biggest challenge in Dariusz Michalczewski. Like Pacquio some where crowing him the greatest during his reign
Most underrared: Larry Holmes, Luis Manuel Rodriguez, Nicolino Locche, Mike McCullum, Ivan Calderon, Carlos Zarate, Vicente Saldivar
Mike Tyson (who the heck did he beat that the other greats didn't? He lost all of his big fights, you can make excuses all you like but... He lost in the end. It's like saying Ali lost to Frazier because of his 3 years of exile, you can say that's a good reason but I mean, Joe Frazier hated him, he had something pushing him in that fight and that's how he won), Rocky Marciano (He didn't beat anyone at all, I mean he was getting obliterated by Walcott before that 1 lucky punch plus, Moore and Louis were both old), FMJ (He ducks the Pac-Man and LOST to Castillo and wouldn't beat a prime De La Hoya if you watch the fight), Sugar Ray Robinson... Just kidding. Vitali Klitschko (He has barely been active lately and frankly, he hasn't had any challenge. His speed is ridiculously slow if you watch closely, his opponents literally walk into the punches of the slowest heavyweight i've ever seen). Ken Norton (Maybe because I ran out of people to think of but still, he beat Ali i'll admit that but then he lost twice again to him, he was obliterated by Foreman. And Earnie Shavers knocked him out in 1 round. He never did good against punchers, and his chin wasn't the best if you look. He lost to Larry Holmes, you could say that was a good opponent but come on. Larry Holmes didn't beat much others either). Don't hate this is all just opinion :)
Mike Tyson, Manny Pacquiao, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr, Oscar De La Hoya
Manny Pacquiao- early KO losses largely ignored, is fairly one dimensional, titles in multiple weight classes don't mean much in this era.
Klitschko Brothers- needs to be a super heavyweight division. both these lumbering giants are lucky to be competing in this era
Humberto Gonzalez- Once called the most fearsome puncher in boxing. He was not
Harry Arroyo- Anyone remember that he was once in the top 5 pound for pound fighters list in KO and Ring? laughable
Ray Mancini- it's his personal story that's compelling, not his skills as a fighter
5.mayweather
4. marciano
3. lennox lewis
2. hector camacho
1. leon spinks
Number one is Pac man second Rocky marciano third Julio Caesar Chavez fourth Lennox Lewis fifth Roberto Duran
My 5 in no order:
Gene Tunney - He's an ATG Light Heavyweight boxer who I have ranked #3 just behind Roy Jones Jr(Don't let Jones' losses to Tarver, Johnson, Calzaghe and B-Hop rematch fool you) and Ezzard Charles(My #1 ATG Light Heavyweight), make no mistake but Tunney is extremely overrated as a Heavyweight and receives way too much praise for his two victories over an out of shape and unmotivated Jack Dempsey when "The Lost Count Fight" clearly would've gone to Dempsey hence the name of the rematch. People tend to think because of Tunney's victories over Dempsey, he has a good chance of beating some of the Top 12 ATG Heavyweights.
Jack Dempsey - Recieves WAY too much praise for his KO victory over Jess Willard who's not even a very decent boxer to begin with and also receives too much praise for his 26 first round Knockouts when people are still ignoring the fact that there was no standing 8 count during Dempsey's era and that thee Heavyweight competition was weak during Dempsey's era. I still have him as my ATG Heavyweight but ranked slightly lower than the Top 10 if you're talking about In the Ring Skills.
James J. Corbett - He was called "The Father of Modern Boxing" because of his supposed defense. He only looked good with his "Defense" against a fat and drunk/out of shape John L. Sullivan. I mean Jack Johnson's also overrated along with his "defense" and "speed" but at least some of Jack Johnson's "defense" was more effective and is more likely effective(Not saying that Johnson's defense is good enough for modern boxing) in modern boxing than Corbett's "defense". Therefore, I think Johnson deserves the title "The Father of Modern Boxing".
Jerry Quarry - I know I'm gonna receive a lot of heat on this forum for this but I think Quarry is pretty overrated. Don't get me wrong, he was a tough and gutsy fighter and I enjoyed watching his fights but because Quarry is from the Golden Age Era of the Heavyweight Division, people tend to rank him in the ATG Heavyweights list higher than he should be and people even ranked Quarry in the Top ATG Caucasian/White Boxers list way higher than he should be when other Caucasian/White boxers such as Marciano, LaMotta, Pep, Canzoneri, Greb and a ton of other ATG Caucasian/White Boxers that I can think of are far more skilled, talented and accomplished than Quarry.
Floyd Patterson - As much as I love the guy as a person and enjoyed his fights, he gets ranked way higher than he should be on the Heavyweights list. He may have been the first to ever regain the World Heavyweight Title but the Heavyweight competition during Patterson's time wasn't good and this was 2 months and 9 days before Cassius Clay(4 years before changing his name to Muhammad Ali) turned pro and this was also during the time when a very dangerous adversary, Sonny Liston, was being avoided for the World Heavyweight Championship match.
Tyson, may weather , Mr T from rocky 3
Me and my friend was having a debate over the weekend. About who we thought was the most overrated boxers ever. I said that Leon Spinks was pretty overrated. He replied, how can Leon Spinks be overrated. If he was a former amature gold medalist. And his biggest victory was over the great Muhammed Ali. But, he said of course, Muhammed Ali avenged his loss to Spinks. I was lost for words because I never knew that Spinks beat Ali. But, I was excited to hear that Muhammed Ali had redemption. He then said that Mike tyson was the most overrated boxer ever. I immediately corrected him and said that Mike tyson was the baddest man on the plannet in his era. He also hold the record of being the youngest Heavyweight world champion in boxing history. And most of his loses were trials, tribulations, and minor set backs.
I was wondering who do you guys think was the most overrated boxers ever ? And no being biased. Reasonnable explanations please.
