This is the basic punch and most important punch in boxing. Every other punch thrown is set up by the jab. You can keep an opponent off balance and thinking just by thrown a regular and constant jab in there face. It can be used in numerous ways for both a defensive maneuver and an offensive weapon. There is an old saying that a jabbing southpaw is hard to beat. It is a setup punch for all others i.e the hook cross and uppercut. I advise anyone getting into competitive boxing or fighting to master the most important punch the jab.
The jab is both an offensive and defensive weapon. It is a scoring punch at the same time one that could keep the opponent at bay, off balance and have him re-start his own offense. If followed up or in combination with a straight or hook if the opponent stay within striking distance or cross or uppercut if the opponent opts to wade in, the jab is more effective as a set-up punch.
The jab has been the staple or bread and butter of great fighters of yore and even the present, including a few knockout artists as Archie Moore, Rocky Marciano, Sonny Liston and Mike Tyson.
There has been very few successful fighters who do not use the jab to set up their killer punches.
The jab has two advantages.
First, it has the greatest reach. So, you have the best chance of landing and not getting hit back.
Second, it is both offence and defence. It may land, and it may simply threaten and blind, and be a block. The threat of a following right is always there, so a boxer with a log reach can use the jab exclusively, and throw only a few rights to keep the threat there. That was Holmes method.
Once Tyson forgot to jab, he was done. He had a brilliant setup jab until he fired Rooney....then, he forgot and went to power punches only. His jab had set up his power punches.....without it, he was easy to read......
The jab is a stunner and asset up punch. The jab when it hits the nose, especially to a beginner stuns him, stops him momentarily in his tracks, may bring bot a tear and blood instantly and sets up the right hand left hook to finish the combination. Some fighters past and present could maintain the jab the whole fight scoring points and keeping the opposition off balance.
The jab is everything. Offense or defense it sets up other punches or combinations. IMO its the most important tool you can have. The sweet science is beautiful
The jab keeps the opponent at a distance. It sets up a counterpunch. It is especially effective if boxer has a reach advantage.
You mean "effective" ,if your punch was "affective" ,it's like saying you'r punch is affectionate as in loving.
A jab is good for setting up power punches and/or deterring your opponent from walking in.
Make them blink? Makes them off balance? Sets up your hard shots?
How often ir many times should the jab be thrown in.boxing?
