Bowling isn't really a sport, anything you get better at as you consume alcohol isn't a sport. Also 3 practices a week is *nothing* most sports like football or basketball or soccer have 5 or 6 practices a week. Some sports like swimming will have 8 or 9 practices a week (AM & PM).
Anyway it's likely that the teacher misjudged how many people would show up , he probably wasn't planning on having cuts, but due to the popularity of it, he was forced to. The coach may have already had a group of people in mind (returning bowlers) and was only going to take a few people from the tryouts.
Join a non-school league.
So, I guess he dislikes everyone else who didn't make the team.
