What the people are saying is that you should customize your skateboard. I'm not bashing on pre-built complete skateboards, but once you've been skateboarding for a while you would want to choose different parts from different companies specializing in that one component of a skateboard.
If you buy a pre-built complete, for example a Mini Logo complete, they (the company) make pretty much everything from the deck down to the hardware, the completes are usually decent but as you grow as a skateboarder you want specialized equipment for your board, for example, companies like Thunder Trucks and Royal Trucks specialize in making trucks and they've spent years researching what works best and experimenting with different shapes and all to get the perfect truck, this is why people choose to customize their boards, so that they can choose the best component from a company specializing in making them for optimal performance.
If you go to a skateshop, just ask the guys down there what they recommend, I do not recommend Zumiez or one of those mall shops cause the guys there are there usually just as a job, research on skate shops around your area, ones that are skater owned so that the people there actually know what they're talking about based on their own experiences and so that they can help pick out the perfect board for you based on their own experiences riding those brands. Once you pick out the parts of your customized board, they'll probably help you set it up so you don't have to worry about that. You could also choose to try do it yourself, if it isn't a busy day for them, you could ask them to guide you through or just watch YouTube videos on how to set up a skateboard beforehand, hands-on experience is always good, you're gonna want to start setting up your own skateboards anyway next time instead of always relying on the shop to do so.
So to summarize, yes, you choose the parts and the shop makes it.
Just for your information, some good brands (from my experiences) are
Deck:-
Baker
Krooked
Foundation
Truck:-
Thunder
Royal
Wheels:-
Bones (I totally recommend these)
Spitfires
Bearings:-
Bones Reds (Affordable AND good)
Hardware:-
whatever, I just use the shop hardware they give for free or for a small price.
Griptape:-
Mob (Recommend this)
Jessup.
But of course, I haven't skated every single brand out there, so I suggest you just go out there and pick what you find looks good cause it is your first skateboard, and getting your own experience is way better than basing your preferences off someone else's experience. Good luck, and be warned skateboarding isn't gonna be easy, but is probably the best thing I have ever tried doing in my life.
Those who are saying that are probably suggesting you buy each component and assemble it yourself.
The major components of a skateboard are:
Deck
Grip tape
Trucks (2)
Wheels (4)
Bearings (8)
Hardware (8)
If you are unfamiliar with how to assemble a skateboard from its components, I would suggest you buy a complete deck first, and learn backwards on how they function.
Well they mean you need to actually make it your self. As in, cutting out wood, gluing it together, etc. You should either buy a board complete or choose the parts at a place like Zumiez.
go into a skate shop and support your local skate community. they will also help you asemble and pick your stuff out.
i recomend a blank deck as you rarely spend your time looking at the bottom of your board
so i want to get a skateboard and in the internet dozens of people say 'make your own skateboard'
but the question is whos going to make it ?
do i like, choose the parts and the shop makes it ?? help
