Punching with weights?

Not generally a good idea. It's a principal of exercise physiology. We use resistance to train core strength, but not for skill training.

So.. .It's fine to do the basic movements of a punch against resistance. Like...Doing bench presses or pushups. However, training full-speed punches with weights will throw off your timing and also possibly cause injury.

Now, you can get "bag gloves", protective gloves for working the heavy bag. These generally have small steel cylinders inside for you to grip and also to simulate the weight of full-sized boxing gloves.

But boxing gloves only weigh a few ounces, not a few pounds.

Another thing you can do is to simulate the punching motion against rubber-band resistance. You don't do full-speed punching, you just work the motion against the resistance of the rubber.

I've been boxing for half my life I learned the best way to train is one step at a time if you have little expirence you should learn\master the basic foot work, every punch in the book and movement learn all sorts of different ways to do them get your good speed and power and Then use the weights its better that way because you need to be really good till you use weighs or you might hurt yourself or be doing them wronge with lack if experience am turning pro and I still don't use weighs much myself hope this help if you need more help email me jesus.jesusvillela@gmail.com

Punching with weights will help your strength, make sure you work on the explosive factor - when you go back to to 0.25lb gloves you will feel faster and explosive.

key. technique is everything, don't throw out your back with the extra weight and moment that will move you around.

It won't give you power and neither will it give you hand speed because both punching power and hand speed are genetic. It will just make your hands feel light.

I'm training for self-defence. I have a pair of 0.25 lb gloves, a pair of 1 pound weights, and a pair of 5 pound weights. I want to have a powerful punch, but I don't want to get slow punches. What should I train with, and why do you say so? (I don't mean that in a sassy way, I just want to know your reasoning and science behind why you think so).
