Protein powder and boxing?

I dont see the issue with putting whey protein into your diet. However no powder or supplement should be used as a complete substitute for food by that i mean having protein powder does not mean you dont have to have meat or other foods containing protein you still do its only meant to be used in addition to food.

I feel for you if times are hard but protein powder isnt mega cheap you can easily get cheap meat for example chicken thighs and legs are very cheap especially compared to fillets or breast. You could also try tuna or eggs which have high amount of protein you can just have egg whites if you want less fat.

I would ignore people who say protein powder is only used for gained muscle because its simply not true many athletes ranging from soccer players to marathon runners use protein supplements in some form or other the key is the type of protein powder. I would recommend a recovery formula which will contain protein, carbohydrates and other nutrients. Because you are very active its important you have a decent amount of carbohydrates. You could use whey protein but a recovery forumla would be miles better as it has a blend of key nutrients you need since you are so active.

Whey protein is never "cheap," but if you go to Wal-Mart they sell it significantly less than what they charge for it at a store like GNC. You can find it in the "medicine" section, and many grocery stores carry whey protein as well. I used to take a lot of whey protein about 14 years ago when I was trying to become a pro wrestler.

Boxing is very different from other sports like football and bodybuilding in that bigger muscles do not provide a benefit to the athlete (because extra muscle slows down arm/hand speed). Most boxers do not pump iron for this reason - or they lift weights minimally. Boxers get their large arm muscles through hitting the bag, doing thousands of pushups and pullups, and that's basically it.

You can also get protein naturally through vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, beans, etc). If you eat meat, try to get lean meats because you don't want the cholesterol to clog your arteries at a young age.

No protein powder isn't necessary. Chicken, Tuna, beef, and red meat is your protein. Eating low fat carbs like pasta is the carbs you should be eating. And whey protein isn't 100% proven or reliable. And alot of muscle will make you slow and you'll tire faster due to more muscles requiring more oxygen. Just stick to the 70% of cardio boxing requires. And you could work to help out with your money issue. And the way I see protein powder useful is to gain in weight. Other than that its gonna put tons of bad weight on you.

Protein on a budget

Tuna and egg whites

Tuna 99 cents 20g - 30g of protein

carton of dozen eggs 99 cents 60g - 70g of protein

im 17 years old im 6 ft 2 and a male i weigh 180. I train all week or 6 days, i run 7 miles or play basketball sometimes i lift but i go to boxing mostly and i am a boxer. I've looked at other posts and they say to not taking protein powder because i do not want to gain muscle. Even if i don't lift, running tears muscles wouldn't it be better to build your leg muscles than too let your muscles deteriorate? The more muscles you have the more calories you burn which may lead to lower body fat. Isnt that better though? A lot of athletes still have fat on them so isn't it better to have a 160 lb boxer who has decent muscles but body fat or a 170-180lb fighter who has less fat but more muscles??

My parents really can't afford to buy protein as well like chicken and meat. All i have is milk and beans which i eat raw but sometimes i don't even have that. we really don't have food anymore, i haven't eaten a piece of fruit in about 2 weeks. When we had money i use to eat at-least 3 fruits a day. Can you also help me out and give me a recommendation for whey protein?? I want pretty cheap but 100% protein, no sweeteners or stuff that is bad for my body. Thanks so much.
