Most overrated boxer of all time?

tyson wasn't overrated , he was a awesome wrecking machine at his peak .

the most overrated fighter would be either hector macho camacho or david tua ....

camacho good fighter but know balls ,never won a big fight

tua ....to me a slow heavy punching slugger with a good chin ,easy to outbox

"Overrated" is a relative term. Every fighter who has ever been called "Great" has also been called Overrated by others. It only means that the fighter gets more attention outside of boxing than in.

.

Boxing is full of fighters who have been labeled "Overrated". Some are legitimately great. Others are really overrated.

.

I don't think Tyson is the most overrated, though some do still tend to rank him higher than he should be rated. On the other hand, others foolishly don't rank him at all. I'll give you a good example.

.

Most "experts" will not place Tyson in the Top 10, rightfully so. His accomplishments certainly don't warrant a Top 10 ranking. However, this is primarily due to his peers. He shared an era with two of history's best, both of who deserve to be in the Top 10, Holyfield and Lewis.

.

Tyson failed against the best of his generation, losing twice to Holyfield, once to Lewis and never facing Bowe. He also missed Moorer and dodged Foreman. For this reason, guys like Marciano, Dempsey, Charles and even Tunney rank higher on some lists.

.

Here is the problem with this. All of the above have accomplished more, DURING THEIR TIME, than Tyson did during his. However, NONE of them would beat Tyson IN THE RING. This is why I always look at BOTH criteria, Historical Impact and In The Ring.

.

Historically, Tyson doesn't rank very high. He shouldn't. However, not very many would have beaten him In The Ring at his best. Only those who could get past the early rounds would do it.

Rocky Graziano. He won the 2nd Zale fight. he spent most of his career beating up on welterweights. He was like Joe Namath, more hype and charisma than ability.

teodor hit right on the money although he was a good fighter he had no real good fight because he refuse to come to the states and fight thats why he had a perfect record if it wasn't for Jeff Lacey who I also thought was overrated going over there to fight Calzhage people in the states would have probably would have never heard of him.

Both Klitchko brothers.

AS for any douchebag who says 'Tyson' - he should bury his head in a sack of poop, he knows nothing about boxing whatsoever.

Tyson was one of the most devastating punchers of his era - and you only need to look at how easily he despatched so many of opponents in his hey day.

The knock out of Spinks was sensational.

Joe Calzhage. The US boxing media just fell in love with the guy. He won the then fringe WBO vacant super middleweight title in 1997 in his home country and spent the next decade merely content in defending the same mostly in his court yard while James Toney, Roy Jones, Jr. and Bernard Hopkns were engaged in high profile, bigger money, more prestigious fights at 160, 168 and 175 lbs. across the big pond. He decided to cross the Atlantic over to the USA when Jones and Hopkins were already slipping while Toney was already campaigning in the cruiser and even the heavies. How convenient.

thats what geeks do... they take records as everything...

they cant spot real power... or maybe they werent there to witness tyson in his prime, so they try to build their opinions just by mere records....

De La Hoya

first I need to correct people who said pacman and calzaghe were overrated pacman beat every prime great fighter he faced and often did it by ko he is a 9 weight world champion how is he overrated and calzaghe beat then unbeaten and hailed as the next mike tyson jeff lacy in style and also beat a prime unbeaten mikkel kessler in better style then what carl froch did also beat bika who gave ward problems. to me victor ortiz is the most overrated he quits in everyone of his fights he beat bums hype jobs and past prime champions.

Tyson wasn't overrated, he was Tyson-rated. I mean yeah he didn't have Ali, Foreman etc on his resume but when you are a 19 year old who is obliterating grown heavyweight men like it's nothing in 30 seconds you are bound to get credit. Not to mention he was the youngest undiputed heavyweight champion at 20 years old.

The most overrated fighter IMO is Chavez sr.

I'd go with Mike Tyson. People talk about him like he was some sort of invincible demi-god, but his record shows that he was anything but. He seems to get credit for a lot of things he NEVER DID lol. It's always a bunch of "could haves", "would haves", and "should haves" with Tyson. His entire legacy is hypothetical haha.

pacquiao
