Is Floyd Mayweather the greatest of all time?

Posted at: 2015-04-20
The simple answer is no.

Corrales, Castillo, Gatti, Hatton, Alvarez are good, but not great fighters. And Castillo arguably beat him in the first fight and Alvarez was fought at a catchweight.

Marquez was an aging blown up lightweight, especially then. Cotto, Mosley and De La Hoya were over the hill. Cotto actually gave him a tougher fight than most expected and the fight with Oscar was pretty close.

IMHO, without Pac on his resume, he doesn't deserve to be called a true ATG (let alone THE ATG). The same also applies to Pac as I believe that fight could have happened by now if both guys really wanted it. Can you imagine Ali never fighting Frazier?

No, he is not. it is not that he is not P4P the best boxer. Very intelligent. So intelligent that he will fight only for big bucks and pick who he wants to fight. He said it himself. It is his business. A business man will get the best possible deals for the least possible amount (of injuries in his case).

He wouldn't be undefeated if he had fought everybody they wanted him to fight. He would have fallen into the same trap of political hoopla every other boxer has fallen.

But since he is the decision maker, he will do business . That's it.

And that is WHY he will not be the all time best boxer ever. Consider men like Ali, a genius and all time best .

Sugar Ray Leonard and Roberto Duran, all fought smart but they gave some all time great fights.

Marvelous Marvin would take on all comers. Yet he still is not considered the very best. So No, Floyd Mayweather will be one of the best. But not THE best.

No. The guy won't even fight a career lightweight Pacquiao. Mosley was like fifty and almost turned the lights out on him. Floyd is awesome, I'd put him in the top 7, but not until he fights Manny Pacquiao can he get higher. He won't fight everybody unless it's on his terms. He should make that fight happen just out of principle.

The greatest Welterweight of all time is Sugar Ray Robinson, who was 81-0 at Welterweight. In those 81 fights he beat guys like Basilio, Lamatta and all time great Hank Armstrong. Floyd will never do 81 fights and win them all. He hasn't faced anyone as highly rated all time as Armstrong.

No way not even close. He is a good fighter in a very bad era. Boxing is down for the count circa 2013. No one knows and no one cares. Sugar Ray Robinson and Sugar Ray Leonard were both better than Floyd ever was..Henry Armstrong is better as well. Roberto Duran I can go on and on.

Few boxing experts would consider him a top 20, far less the greatest ever. I think the International Boxing Research Org. has him as a top 30 all time featherweight because of his best years in superfeatherweight, that's it.

Mayweather has never fought an undisputed champion in any division. As you said; he fought guys like Gatti who struggled with bums when Kostya Tszyu was the true champion at 140lbs at the time.

As for papertitle holders; Mayweather has beat 20, but guys like Julio Cesar Chavez went 80-0 against the best of his time and had over 30 title fight victories.

Recently Samson Dutch Boy Gym went 43-0 with 40 title fights as the lineal WBF champion, he NEVER left the title vacant because of a mandatory challenger.

I do think Mayweather can retire top 20 ATG.

44-0 is pretty but Calzaghe went 45-0, Rocky Marciano [who unlike the afore mentioned, fought the best] went 49-0.

Other undefeated champions include Young Mitchell, Jack McAuliffe, Jimmy Barry, Laszlo Papp, Terry Marsh, Ji Won Kim, Ricardo Lopez and Sven Ottke.

Just one of the greatest, but definitely not the greatest. The G.O.A.T. is none other than Muhammad Ali, then there are guys like Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis, Henry Armstrong, Benny Leonard, Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, and several others who were far greater than Floyd.

Floyd Mayweather's weiner is only 1/4 the size of Ray Robinson's big GOAT's wang.

Floyd mayweather is the greatest welterweight of all time but Muhammad ali is the G.O.A.T. We all may say different things but lets respect eachother opinions.

time is not as good an indicator as the number of fights and who he has fought.

Comparing others they are better than Mayweather for the total number of fights.

Look he has been fighting for 16 years and is still undefeated.Has he hand picked some fights...yes but if I showed you a list of some of his opponents it would shock you

He has beaten

UNDEFEATED Diego Corrales

UNDEFEATED Ricky Hatton

UNDEFEATED Canelo Alvarez

Arturo Gatti (was on a 5 fight win streak and was reigning WBC Light welterweight champ)

Jose Luis Castillo twice (first fight was close but dominated him in rematch)

Juan Manuel Marquez( embaressed marquez from start to finish)

Miguel Cotto( Cotto was on a 3 fight win streak and was the Champion going into fight also Cotto is younger

Shane Mosley Mosley was just off of his win over Margarito and was supose to be to strong for Mayweather

Oscar Dah Lahoya no matter how close the fight was a win is a win

Most of the guys on this list are multiple time champions is he the greatest

he was adamant when he told everybody he's business smart lookin only for particular opponents that would give him easy fights w/o knowing its the same as cherrypicking...he just handed over his wbc belt instead of defending it from pac...

and you want to give him what belongs to muhammad ali? whatever youre smokin, quit!

The GOAT probably muhammad ali however floyd belongs around 30...But if you ask me, probably is in top 100 because he is a coward...LOL...i cannot give credit to a coward...

Mexican legend Salvadore Sanchez

gets my vote, just ahead of Jimmy Wilde

Today's talent pool isn't great enough for Floyd to be considered the greatest ever, but he has however accomplished the feat of being the unquestionable Greatest Boxer of his Generation.

he never had fought sugar ray robinson

prime manny pacquiao

henry armstrong sugar ray leonard

sam langford or bardos joe walcott and charley burley

we would lost by KO

so GOD no hes not the greatest

I think Floyd mayweather is one of the greatest because he beat 20 world champions.

I do not know where he would rank but he will retire a ATG.

Courts of law love him.

Cowards don't deserve any credits..

He is the Greatest Cherry picker of all time

Sugar Ray Robinson was 5'11......He's not a natural welterweight fighter.Floyd is the greatest welterweight fighter ever.

Floyd was 151 pounds when he fought Canelo he was 160 pounds.Floyd Defeated a middleweight in a welterweight fight.

Greatest Welterweight of all time.

no that mayate belongs in a zoo

If he didn't dip Manny ... I would say yes ... but because of that .... no

i would beat him :D
