Depends on what kind of celebration you're going for. It's a seventeenth birthday, so I would say friends all over the place, mingling and joking around. For food, I would say lots of small munchables - plates of sliders, veggie plates with lots of different dips, maybe chips and wings. A couple big bowls of punch? Our family favorite is ginger ale poured over raspberry sherbet - just turn the sherbet out of the container into a large bowl and pour a couple of 2-liters of ginger ale (or 7up) over the top. The frozen sherbet keeps it nice and cold, and you can have some extra in the fridge and freezer in case you get low. I bet you could get a cake store to decorate a cake to have a high-jump or long-jump setup on the top, ask around.
