How to get over my fear of doing back handsprings?

Please do not try to teach yourself back handsprings without a spotter. Its very dangerous and you could potential break something. Trampoline's are nice but too often kids learn how to do skills on a trampoline and can't land them on the performance floor. So many kids we meet in our program have been training on trampoline's and when they have to hit the skill on a regular foam cheer mat or high school gym floor they were unsuccessful.

As someone who has judge competitions, many of the injuries we see during competition are caused by athletes who only train on trampoline's and when they hit the foam mat competition floor they really plow into the ground and hurt themselves.

You need to train on a safe surface with a spotter until you are comfortable landing the skills on your own. With only a month to go, you really need to find a local tumbling program or private coach in your area and get to work ASAP. Ask some cheerleaders currently on the team, they may know someone you can go to.

Our Fremont Bay Area Allstars Program RAW Talents offers tumbling specifically for students trying to make their teams. It is a lot of work, but those who really apply themselves can land the skills fairly rapidly. If a student told us they had only one month to hit such a skill we would assess them first to determine if that was even possible. Strength, form, overall fitness are factors when trying to land the skill. If they have it, then that person would probably need to train no less than 3 days a week to land the skill. 1 month is not a lot of time, but its also not impossible.

Go sign up for gymnastics or tumbling classes at a gym with proper equitment, it's very hard and not to mention dangerous trying to teach yourself at home, on grass on a gym floor.

practice every day at home if you think you need it try asking your mom or dad if they will spot you at home. also see if you can get a mat you would probably feel better when practice at home with a mat under your feet.( i am a gymnast/dancer )

tips

always bend your legs when starting and ending one

make sure when you do it you are in the right clothes

try to practice a few times a day

hope this helped

Take tumbling classes
