How to beat a taller person?

You know you must be close enough to hit him and he knows that as long as he keeps you outside your reach you can not hurt him.

Since he can avoid your rushes, do not rush him. Instead try to duck inside his punches and counter him.

When he throws a punch his guard is not good, since his arm is extended.

Bey either stepping inside or outside his arm you should be able to reach him and hit him while his arm is extended. You can block his punches by using your hands or forearms to move them off to the side so you can then slide closer and hit him.

this is the game of counter punching, you never lead you always counter.

As a taller fighter I know some of the tricks that shake me the most.

First, get used to using head movement to escape the jab. Use ide to side head movement to get inside. Make sure also not to bend at the hips and come up straight. If he timed you, he'd step back and uppercut. Make sure you have a wide stance and that you're head is always, always moving. Even when you're not attacking or you think you're safe you want to keep moving that head. This will force him to jab and turn and that can exhaust a taller fighter very quickly. If you can counterpunch with a few overhand rights even better.

If he's sidestepping then watch closely to see which way he's running (usually to your left if you're an orthodox stance) and then angle your attacks so you're not coming on straight forward. Either 1/2 and then step back to watch him run or a double jab mixing high and low to watch what he does. Also try to imagine there is a poll in the centre of the ring. Always keep your back to the pole, imagine that you're even tied to it if you like. That will help with cutting off the ring and keep you from getting spun around.

Once inside work the body with hooks and upper cuts. Watch Tyson for good combos (5/5/2, 6/6/4, 2/3/5 and 2/5/3 are some good ones). These usually work to either raise or lower the hands of the taller fighter and beautifully. Tyson also fought in the pockets (under the arms of the taller fighter) by keeping a wide stance and leaning heavily to the side. This makes the taller fighter misjudge distance and overextend any counter-punches.

Feinting is also an underused but great tactic for a shorter fighter who's gotten inside. I use a philly shell defence to cover up when someone gets inside so I rely on watching a fighter's rhythm to roll the shoulder at the right time. Mixing a feint to disrupt the rhythm of your attack will help prevent counterpunches from an experienced tall fighter.

Obviously you really watch the fatigue of your opponent. Trade secret: when he backs off he's resting. Don't let that happen. Walk him down for a round by always coming in and following him around the ring. If you're slipping the jab and countering properly he'll be exhausted fast and you'll have an easier time in the later rounds.

Don't forget your jab either. This is a really common mistake with shorter fighters fighting a tall guy. While you don't want to get into a fencing match, short snappy jabs (even when you're out of range!) will make your taller fighter react, move his hands and slow down with fatigue. Watch James Toney v. Holyfield and see how Toney jumps in with a high then low jab. It wears down the taller fighter and keeps him shifting his hands. You should also cover up the end of your combos with a jab if you or he makes any distance.

In short, most taller fighters depend on the jab, rhythm and leg movement that allows them to create distance. Fighting in close is a nightmare for the tall fighter because they get tired faster, they have slower hands and they don't have the leverage for any hard counter attacks. Eliminate the jab by constantly moving your head, moving in on angles and countering the jab with an overhand right. Eliminate the rhythm by constantly changing up the attack with your own jabs (mixing low and high), combos that are "off-beat" and by feinting. Finally eliminate that leg movement by walking him down in the earlier rounds. Taller fighters run out of gas quickly

I know that's a lot of info but if you follow it you'll be a nightmare for your taller opponents.

I would could try to help but im an mma fighter and i would usually shoot in on somebody and take it to the ground of they were backing up. Try using a double jab and pop forward pushing with your back leg with each jab. Uppercuts would work. Left hook to the body is a good blow! good luck And be safe!!

when he throws a punch duck under it and nail his gut with a right hand as hard as you can if you get him good that might just be the end of it lol. that is how you do it cut him down with punches to the stomach and ribs

Well i have the same problem and my friend said that when they punch it takes longer for them to get back their full guard so get close and try punch him and counter.

Lately I been slap boxing wit a couple of my friends. I pretty much eff up everyone my size are a little taller but this one guy that way taller keeps beating me. Im 5'7 and he is atleast 5'11. He has way more reach than me so he fights from a distance. Everytime i rush him he either takes long back steps or side step. I what to know some tips that can help me beat this oppentant. P.S. He gets tiried fast and has to take breaks every 1 min. And every 30 sec. Thanks guys.
