Great fighters who had suspect chins - Past & Present?

First, I totally agree with you about Lennox. The two shots that KO'd him would have KO'd most people. He even got back up against McCall. That's really the only criticism I have of Lennox. If he was in a fight that he thought he could easily win, he would have lapses in concentration. Lennox had a way better chin than the haters give him credit for. He took some massive shots against Vitali, which would have put a lot of boxers down.

As for your question, I guess Pacquiao could be added to that list. I don't think people are questioning his chin, but I think that the shot that knocked him out would have KO'd most boxers around that weight.

Nigel Benn, before the McClellan tragedy, got KO'd by Micheal Watson and Chris Eubank. Against Watson, he gassed himself out, then beat the count, but was counted out. Then against Eubank, the ref stopped the fight with a few seconds left in the round, which I think Benn could have survived. I know not everyone will consider him 'great' because he is British, but he is definitely great in my eyes.

Ricky Hatton's chin was also questioned. I think with him it was more a case of getting cleanly hit by good accurate shots rather than having a weak chin. The Pacquiao KO especially, would have KO'd a fair few boxers.

The punches with which Rahman and McCall knocked out Lewis wd NOT have ko'ed anyone - both guys were slappers compared to, say, Cleveland Williams, Ernie Shavers, and Corrie Sanders. Lewis was actually concussed by at least 6 other opponents, so I'd rate his chin as "average".

BTW, "suspect chin" usually means "weak chin".

The "whiskers" of Ezz Charles weren't all that great - Jack Johnson, Jack Dempsey & Ali (both had great recuperative powers, but it didn't take a powerpuncher to put either on Queer Street), Benny Leonard, Fighting Harada, etc also come to mind, 'tho I certainly wdn't say that they had "suspect chins".

Two that immediately came to mind were Thomas Hearns and Wladimir Klitschko. Hearns went down to Leonard, Hagler and Barkley, Wlad to Pruitty, Sanders and Brewster. Both were haunted by those glass jaws their entire careers.

Roy Jones Jr. is another, Roy went from boxing's p4p best to a shot fighter in the space of a Tarver left hook, and the subsequent losses to lesser fighters tarnished a hall of fame career.

Tyson getting beat down by Holyfield, Lewis, Danny Williams and Kevin McBride makes the list.

The last is Manny Pacquiao, his KO losses to Singsurat and Toricampo pale to insignificance to the devastating KO at the hands of Marquez.

lewis for one. Also joe frazier- he was only good against ali due to chemistry. Also hearns (sic) he was only good against hagler. also ali- he had a bad chin but good at taking body shots. Whenever he was hit flush he went down as with old henry cooper.

Now i don't mean Glass chins !!!!!

What i mean by this is fighters who where KO'd by shots that would of KO'd anyone but had left a question mark over their career.

Example - Lennox Lewis , the 2 shots that KO'd him would have destroyed any man , but it left his chin in question for the rest of his career , when in fact Lennox had a pretty decent chin.

And i mean Great fighters NOT Good fighters.
